Honestly, how do you still trust to sell items on eBay?

Starting to get really annoyed with all the scams/chargebacks. How can we continue to trust selling on eBay when we're getting scammed multiple times per month and eBay does nothing about it? I've lost thousands of dollars due to chargebacks. The most recent, a guy bought something and did a chargeback a couple days after I shipped it. $250 down the drain because we know the credit card companies never side with the sellers. Had another guy buy a Dyson vacuum from me and did a return and sent back a destroyed (literally in pieces) vacuum and then did a chargeback and even with different serial numbers the credit card company still sided with them. Another $400 down the drain.

I'm sure sorry you're going through this. I've not (yet) experienced a chargeback, but I understand that they give sellers fits... I only know of a couple who have had success in winning them. It does test your faith...

I'd address that to Ebay for Business on Facebook..........give exact examples with item numbers.  Read the instructions for posting.........and ask how/if  you could have handled these differently in order to be protected......rather than issue a blanket indictment of ebay (you might get better info)........

@superior.outlet

A chargeback on a SNAD is difficult to prevail.  Certain types of items, not well suited for this platform, unfortunately.

We had to stop selling high-value lego sets here.  Sell them elsewhere now due to all the fraud.

Chargebacks are nearly impossible to win and scammers know it.

Make sure you reported both of these buyers from your transaction view as fraud, etc and added them to your BBL.

Often these IDs end up NARU.  If either of yours did, consider appealing if the 2 incidents you referenced are recent.

EBay has no control over chargebacks and they are certainly not going to take the loss for them. Unless you can find a local venue where you can accept only cash, chargebacks and bounced checks are a fact of life for sellers.

Three hard and fast rules for selling on eBay

1. Never list anything you can not afford to lose

2. Never list anything you can not afford to lose

3. Never list anything you can not afford to lose

I think the answer varies greatly depending upon the seller.

If scams and chargebacks are an issue that a seller cannot resolve, then that seller probably cannot trust selling on eBay.

If scams and chargebacks are not an issue for a seller, then that seller probably can trust selling on eBay.

I own a pawn shop, since covid started we started selling more items on eBay. So I have a venue to sell locally, but of course that comes with losing the national market by not selling on eBay. At least through my shop, if there's a chargeback I can deal with the credit card company personally, rather than eBay not allowing any communication whatsoever.

Completely understand.  I sell at flea markets.  No checks, no credit cards, cash.  I used to do credit cards and checks, a couple of incidents and it was a big old nope.  You know the kind, I don't have cash, can I buy this $2 with my card?  3 weeks later, the check bounces or there's a charge-back.  NOPE!

I sell for more here, I don't sell as much, but I save the valuables for online sales.

I should try a couple of old(er) dysons I have thrown in the garage here.  Great, now you have me thinking about what it would cost to ship them....BAHAHAHA!

So you actually let someone pawn a Dyson and you paid them 400? If you only paid them 40 (arbitrary number) and sold it for 400 you are not out 400. You are out 40 plus the shipping and any fees from eBay and nothing more.

I have lost faith in eBay and honestly want nothing more to do with eBay. They don't care, they won't listen but at least I can vent here for a bit.

I've been scammed several times now and I am fed up with eBay. I am considering just listing my items elsewhere, and keep money away from eBay, and save my sanity. eBay never addresses the buyer. Reporting them doesn't do anything, nothing happens to them.

What they really should do is setup their system as Mercari or Poshmark does such as if you make a bid (Which is supposedly a "binding contract" that no one enforces) they should collect payment details at that point so if they are the winner they have to pay out.

Instead people are "I will jack this item up and not pay or cancel immediately after I win" and eBay will do nothing about it.

Since I am dealing with this very situation after my second attempt at selling this item, I will just keep the item for myself, and figure out another way to make ends meet because clearly eBay is not the answer.

Wow. That is hard to take.

We're lucky. It seems we sell items that the most scammers aren't attracted to - vintage toys and books, mainly.

But you are right that eBay doesn't seem to care much about their brand name going to Haydes. Buyers are afraid to buy here. Sellers afraid to sell. Heck, all they need to do to stop most scams is to monitor messages for key words like text, gift card, etc. But that might mean hiring people.

You would have to call and complain to your problem with your cc company. They are the ones who authorized the $$ to be taken from you. I have to assume you sell thousands of items a year because I have never had a chargeback in 20 plus years.

The credit card companies do not set policy for eBay.  The problem is the porous nature of transactions here.
