Just curious - does anyone have any idea why the FVF for books is 12% when most other categories are 10%?

Because they can.....

I have no idea why, but my guess is because it's cheap to send books.

Many new sellers choose to sell books at very low prices. and most likely the FVF was too low to have these listings on eBay

So my multi hundred dollar collectors books get raped just to offset the 99cent cheap books? The MPS is not the only reason I am not selling on ebay after the cutoff.

It could be worse- I think Amazon takes 15% on books!

Probably because the average price of books as well as media mail shipping is lower than other categories, and maybe because of what Amazon charges.

I used to sell media stuff on Amazon and there was alot less work to list an item. Items needed to be in the catalog. All the info along with a decent photo was there for you with no extra work. Less time equals more fees?

A decade or so ago, the FVF on Media was 13%.
That aside ...
I'm not sure a 12% FVF percentage (on a site you can avoid, if you wish) is comparable to that sort of assault.

That was when a FVF of 13 % was applied only to the cost of the item.
Then some sellers dropped the price of the item to $1.00 and increased the cost of shipping.....to offset this drop in cost of the item.
That is when eBay placed a FVF on the cost of shipping as well as the cost of the item.
