This is my first time using variations, and I am struggling a bit. I was wondering why I had not sold anything (we all wonder, right?) and noticed that when I add to shopping cart, it gives me an error.

I was able to add an item from that listing into my cart.

You can't add your own listing to your shopping cart- were you logged into a different account when you got the error?

@frontroguy, if you tried to add one to your cart using this account, then that would be the problem. You can't buy your own items.
I tried adding 2 and then 3 items to my cart, and it worked fine. It appeared to be calculating discounts correctly as well.
You should make sure that you can ship 3 to anywhere in the USA for less than $7.50 with media mail, so you won't lose money (assuming that you just want to break even, and not account for the cost of the goods sold).
purchase price: ((3 * $ 3.99) - $ 2.99) $ 8.98
sales tax paid: 6% (assumed) $ 0.54
payment from buyer: $ 9.52
sales tax deducted to eBay $ 0.54
paypal fees:
(2.90% * $ 9.52) $ 0.28
$ 0.30
total $ 0.58
Deposited to your PayPal: $ 8.40
eBay fees:
(10% * $ 8.98) $ 0.90
Total net: $ 7.50
