Help Shipping with Fed Ex

I have a large but light box I need to ship and it looks like Fed Ex will be the cheapest.  The box is 27x16x11 and weighs 7 lbs.  When I enter this into the calculator I get a cost of $20.77.  I have read that Fed Ex uses dimentional weight though and found a calculator that said the dimentional weight of the packat was 35 lbs.  If I use the ebay calculator and enter in a weight of 35 lbs the new total is $23.27.  Would this be the amount I should expect to pay to ship?  or could it potentially still be more?  Thanks

Re: Help Shipping with Fed Ex

eBay FedEx dimensional weight = 27x16x11 / 166 = 29 pounds (not 35 pounds)

That is the psuedo-weight the FedEx base rate lookups will be based on.

You must have used a calculator not on eBay because the 35pound dim weight you quote is not the correct dim weight for an eBay generated FedEx Ground/Home Delivery label, although it is correct for a FedEx.com generated label (long story - see other threads on it here in the forums)

You enter the actual weight along with accurate dimensions, and let the calculators take care of the dimensional weight calculations.

If the dimensions are accurate (round up any fractional measurements 1/2" and over to the next inch and use the biggest dimensions - bulged sides, etc), there shouldn't be any further charges beyond the $20.77. That amount includes a base rate based on the 35 pound dimensional weight, the residential surcharge, and fuel surcharge.

That's all there is except for Delivery Area Surcharges ($3-$4) if destination zip code is not the one you used for the estimate and is rural,  and other after shipment corrective surcharges like address correction ($14) if the delivery address is wrong/undeliverable, and other very rare additional surcharges for things like situations where your packaging was awful, burst, and FedEx had to fix it up. These things very rarely occur.

Forgot a couple of things: FedEx Smartpost is only $10.93 if you can live with the few extra delivery days, and $100 max pretty useless insurance coverage.

Also, you can't get these use eBay labels or get these  rates unless it was an eBay sale.

Re: Help Shipping with Fed Ex

Fed Ex address correction is not rare - it's fairly common for internet sales. And considering neither ebay nor paypal bother to do even basic address verification, it's a good money maker for Fed Ex.

Re: Help Shipping with Fed Ex

I've personally never seen it in 15 years of using FedEx,  nor any actual instance of it reported here in the forums in 10+ years. Yes, there were a couple in the distant past here where it was a spurious charge (like incorrectly weighed package charges), and as I recall, were credited as such.

If it were a regular occurrence you'd think there would be more "fraud, ripoff, scam" howling here.

To be thorough, I looked through the first 50 google results for "fedex address correction charge" and found next to nothing indicating it is a common occurrence. Most results were carrier, and shipping provider informational pages, or shipping blogger FUD, and one instance 7 years ago that sounded a lot like "fraud, ripoff, scam" here.

I still call it rare, even using eBay labels with its associated deficiencies.
