I contacted Ebay about removing my banking information (managed payments) from my account citing that I would like to KEEP my account I've had for almost 20 years, but will no longer be a seller.
There is NO OPTION for this. The only thing they said I can do is CLOSE my account and start over with a new account to be a "buyer" and not a seller.
In other words, if you agreed to managed payments (not like there was even an option), Ebay will hold your bank account information hostage ad infinitum. It cannot be removed - only replaced by ANOTHER bank. This happens even if you have NO payments pending. This was NEVER made clear when they switched to managed payments.
I was informed that they were "looking" at that and they would request my name be added to the option that doesn't yet exist.
I'll be contacting my bank immediately.

I only use "ghost" numbers for my credit card for online purchases which are provided by my carrier. I never allow an online store I shop at to retain my financial information if given that option. I have NO problem reentering when making a purchase.
I cannot remember the last time I wrote a check so that's not an issue for me.
You can request your data be deleted when closing your Ebay account. And, yes, that is not guaranteed. However, if any of my data was hacked after I closed the account, I would have legal recourse. Since it is not Ebay's policy to allow you to remove your banking information, anyone with intention of harm can hack your account and directly affect your banking IF your account remains open. Leaving the account opens means you agree with their policy of not allowing you to remove your financial information. There is no way to "ghost" a checking account. That's why banks issue debit cards secured by Visa or Mastercard, etc with fraud protection.

I guess that matters to some people. Not me. I'm just a regular guy. I have nothing to hide. By the way ... i use Cottonelle. 😉

I hear when you agree to eBay's policy you are also actually giving them permission to use you in Apples newest Human-CentiPad experiment

"Because ebay is a 'data miner'"...
That's very true - they are data miners as is every other website you interact with. You are given the option to delete your data when you close your account. If a hack occurs after you have closed the account requesting your data be deleted, there is legal recourse if the hack affects you personally or financially. If there is no account - there is no data to "mine" going forward.

"Of all the gin joints in all the world this is the last one I would want holding my bank account info for all eternity... "
Exactly my point. My mistake was connecting my bank account to it in the first place - thinking I could just disconnect it. Nope. No can do. So, I've already changed it over to another bank account I have with a miniscule balance until I'm fully disconnected from all of this. Meaning: when they "allow" me to close my account even though nothing is pending.
"...where beta is slammed against the wall to see what sticks." : ) That made my day. Hilarious and a very apt description of how it all take shape here. lol!

It does matter because the information is mine - not theirs to keep forever and a day. Obviously you have never had an account at a bank or credit card hacked. It's not pleasant and takes forever to resolve. Imagine having your account broken into on vacation. It happens all the time.
If I'm not selling there is no need for my banking information to be on the account. I only use "ghosted" numbers for my credit card for purchases online (the cc carrier provides this) - never a bank account and never my actual credit card account number.

@collage*paper*glue I tend to agree with you. eBay should state a timeframe for wind down (3 months, 6 months, etc,) after the last sale and at that time allow all banking information to be removed at the users request.
No commercial site should be allowed to keep your data if they no longer need it and you have requested it be deleted. It doesn't matter the users reasons for deletion. It's there personal information and they should have some reasonable control over it.
Beyond a wind down time period, what use does eBay have for your banking information or a connection to your bank account? Zero.
Maybe eBay should have feature where if you have been a buyer and a seller under one user name you could actually turn off selling as a function on your account. Could help with fraud too where dormant accounts get hijacked.

@glasser Thank you. Exactly.
I did explain to the rep that I wanted to keep my account as just a buyer - but he said there was no way to accomplish that AND remove my bank account number -- but he did invite me to just close my account and reopen a new account. 🙄
The website states that you CAN disconnect your bank account from your sellers account if you no longer want to sell - but that's completely false not - and not allowed. Of course you don't know that until you try. They need to fix that for sure. It's very misleading.

@coastaltechsolution
So THAT'S the policy they were referring to in that email about the centipad...

What about your bank itself? Can't it be hacked? Your drivers license info. Your vehicle registration info. Your car/health/home insurance info. Your credit card info. Your medical info. Your dental info. Your car loan info. Your mortgage info. Your utilities info. Your pizza hut ordering info. Your Chuck E. Cheese players card info. They can all be hacked. Why are you so concerned about ebay and not about anyone else?

Hacking is not the main issue. There is always a chance that any account can be hacked at anytime. It’s the refusal to disconnect my eBay account from direct access to my bank account that is at issue.
The point is: when I request personal information - in this case, my financial banking information - be removed from a website, that request should NEVER be denied or become an issue. When it is no longer needed for selling and will not be used to shop on EBay but my request is denied per EBay policy, my trust goes out the window.

I still don't see the need to "disconnect" you bank account from ebay. Maybe we're from different generations? I just don't care if ebay has access to that information but that is certainly your prerogative.
Good luck to you and stay safe.

@collage*paper*glue wrote:Why would I have to close MY bank account? Are you kidding me?
Why don't THEY just give that option? Even after a certain time frame for pending sales, etc.? They don't. Removing your banking information ISN'T ALLOWED EVER.
But they do allow you to CHANGE the Bank account on file.
Open a FREE checking account (many choices online). Put $25 in the account or whatever. Our free one is even interest bearing.
ADD to the info of the NEW account to your Seller profile. You now have a new account on file with e-Bay. Your regular checking is no longer attached.

@collage*paper*glue wrote:if you set up a dedicated bank account you will never be able to delete it if you decide to no longer sell. It's not allowed. You would have to close your ebay account and open a new one.
That would be false. All you have to do is delete the bank account. No need to even call Ebay.
