New to ebay selling!
Trying to fill out my second listing and I am trying to figure ot what "modified item" means exactly? it gives you an option of choosing "yes or no". the reason I am really trying to see what this term means for one, I dont want to get something sent back because it wasnt as described, but the jeans I am selling are a pair of MISS ME womens jeans that have been professionally patched in order to make the pants work/school friendly. (Initially when bought there were distressed parts wher you could see skin underneath). I liked the pair so I got them fixed. Down the line, the bottom on the back of the leg where your shoes sometimes can wear down the bottom from stepping on it, I had also re-done to look much better and professional. They look awesome. But is that considered a "modified item"?
any thought or advice on how to describe also would be greatly welcomed! LOVE this job and looking to make a full time switch so I want to learn from the best and do it right!!
Thank you!

If you altered them in any way then they have been modified. If they have been hemmed, patched or anything else that they didn’t come as originally, then they have been modified. Hope this helps you. Also explain the modification in your item description

Hi, welcome to the community. Best to you as you begin your eBay selling journey.
You may already know some of this, so pardon me if you do. Here are some basics for selling here.
Always include measurements in your clothing listings. For jeans, you will want to have inseam, rise, waist, and hips. (For waist and hips, i generally measure from side to side.)
It is also helpful to give the material/fabrication, color, size, care instructions, and any features such as distressed finish or embellishments like embroidery, studs, rhinestones, etc. Use as many Item Specifics as possible because they are used by the search engine when indexing your listing, along with the title and description. It will help with your SEO and determine placement in Search.
Have your shipping supplies on hand when you list. Nothing worse than making a sale and having no idea how you are going to ship, or having nothing to ship it in, or not knowing the shipping costs. All those things need to be determined prior to listing. You can order free supplies from the USPS that are often not readily available at the Post Office. Priority flat-rate padded envelopes are particulary great for shipping clothes. Be sure and get some Priority Regional Rate boxes too, which can be quite economical when shipping heavier things. Invest in a postal scale so you can buy your shipping labels on eBay. They have some discounted rates.
Read up on policies and procedures, especially the Ebay Money Back Guarantee and PayPal Buyer Protection because you will be held to their terms. Familiarize yourself with the eBay User Agreement, Selling Policies, Rules and Policies, and Listing Policies. See links below.
There is a lot to learn here about navigating the platform and protecting your interests. Think about your risk tolerance and whether it is low or high, etc. Selling online comes with inherent risks. There is no way to 100% bulletproof yourself. When just starting out, I recommend to my friends that they start small with inexpensive, easy-to-ship items until they build up some feedback and get some experience under their belts. Come to the boards with any questions anytime.
These are just a very few basics on Selling on eBay 101. I'm sure you will do great here. Again, wish you all the best.

The answer would be YES, you modified them. Buyers want/need to know those things.

I just want to say, your post is one of the most positive, awe-inspiring, positive posts I have seen here in a long time. I really mean it. I posted a new discussion last week asking for people to help out new and some seasoned sellers on just how ebay works and the best way to present items. There are just too many who just blast away with negatives and how they would do it with no real guidance (except for quoting Seller Updates). Again, I really appreciate the time you have taken to do this for this new seller. Bravo!

Hi, I have a black and white not expensive Samsung printer for labels and printing out important documents. And you don't have to buy the Samsung ink as new (Staples has new for I think $60.00 ? a carton). Refurbished ink cartridges work.
I include in my packages a bookmark sized long style card printed with my logo colors like my eBay store front. Then write a personal note on the back to email through ebay if any questions.
As far as the lighting kits, I am a novice with that. I just use a white background in most cases. If I have like a 2 piece pants outfit, I may display on a hanger since it is hard for me to undo my mannequin to pull on pants, etc. But if it is a skirt suit set, I use the mannequin for presentation. My mannequin is female, but when listing Men's I turn the mannequin around and use the back. Sometimes I even shoot Men's denim jackets on the female side and just put in the script the jacket was photographed on the female side and the jacket is very unisex. Which many denim jackets are. Hope this is helpful.

Just looked at your listing and even though you explain about the professionally done patches as part of the description, you still put "NO" under "Modified?"

Sam, you are welcome! Happy to help.
Sounds like you are good with your shipping supplies!
I did invest in a lighting kit with a 3ftx3ft cube. It has helped my pics a lot. The light box cube diffuses the light and minimizes shadows and glare. I use the strong daylight bulbs in my lights on two sides. The overhead lights are regular bulbs but very bright.
After trail and error with several cameras, now i use my iPhone 6 to take my item photos. The pics are sharp and clear and up to the task. I did get a tripod stand to hold the phone when taking pics of larger things that don’t fit in the cube.
For printing, have a regular old HP scanner/printer. Not sure whether its a laser printer or not.
Yes, i add a hand-written thank you note to my packages, as well as a packing slip.
Hope this helps!
