Guaranteed Delivery - check to see if you have been opted in.

Check your seller preferences to see if you have been opted into Guaranteed Delivery.  I checked and was shocked to find that ebay is opting me into programs that I want nothing to do with.

Previous threads have stated that if you have not yet been "opted in" it will not appear for you to "opt out"

I just received the message in my eBay a few minutes ago that I was opted in.  I opted out and said as long at the P.O. can't guarantee my buyers when they will receive their packages, I have no clue why eBay thinks they can.  Nope.  Not happening here.

When eBay opts you in, they put you under the "handling time" option; i.e., you just have to ship on time. You're not responsible for late delivery:

"If the buyer paid for shipping and the item arrives after the guaranteed delivery date, as long as you’ve met your handling time and ensured the package was scanned at the post office or by your carrier, we’ll refund the buyer’s shipping cost or pay for their return label if they no longer want the item.

If shipping was free and the item arrives after the guaranteed delivery date but the buyer wants to keep the item, we’ll send them an eBay voucher. We’ll also handle all customer service queries related to late delivery with this option."

And, at this point eBay will eat it even if you do not meet the handling time. I believe that is until the end of the year. Not sure of the exact date, but I know that has been stated by eBay.

For me the black cloud hanging over the GD is still the fact the a buyer can be disappointed by a "failed guarantee", and they are not going to hold that against eBay when the are looking for an item in the future. Even though eBay avers that they will remove bad feedback related to GD failures, they can not make the buyer feel unharmed by the failure.

I do not buy on eBay when I "need it now", but I am sure some buyers think GD means GD, and not late with a voucher..................... if they complain. They also have the option of returning the item. eBay may cover return shipping. I have read, but don't recall just what it stated. Who eats the initial "free shipping" on that? Who eats the listing fee?  Who eats the PayPal fee? Who eats the cost of the item if the buyer just tosses it in a box to return it without the same care given by the seller?

The devil is always in the details.

Maybe I am wrong but this all seems a lot of fuss and feathers for nothing. I got opted in because my shipping, delivery and all that was consistent with what i said I would do. BUT with 3 day handling and a choice of parcel or priority NONE of my listings actually qualify.

Big deal. So I am opted in. So if I list something that qualifies it will show guaranteed. Otherwise eh.

The greatest fear in it is that even for those of us with handling greater than 1 day, there is that looming suspicion/rumor that eBay will use you "historic record" of actual shipping rather that the listed time.

I'm not sure if that is actually possible, but we are all getting "opted in" on some basis.  Possibly just because there was not enough interest in the program.

Nice part about being opted in was that it alerted us to the fact that 2 of the wife's items had the incorrect handling time in the listings.  I thought that we had bulk edited the handling time at one point, but somehow those 2 were missed.

Odd thing is as I said earlier, even with my 2 day handle, I have items that show they would deliver in 3 days (June 7th) , but do not show as GD.

"Now, I'm wondering if I'm going to have to keep my eye on this setting just to make sure either through yet another glitch or "just because they can" I'll be opted back in.  Smiley Sad"

I would say, probably.  Think GSP.

I understand your fears.  A seller chooses a handling time for a reason, and it is wise and prudent to choose one with a buffer to it in case of the unforeseen.  Cutting it too close is not to anyone's advantage.  Traditionally, mail order companies state a time frame that will have the buyer delighted with how quickly they received their order, not disappointed because it didn't arrive "in time".

So if a seller choose three days, let's say, but traditionally ships the next day, that seller is protecting himself against the time when, for whatever reason, he can't get it out the next day, and he should not be held to a standard of next day when that is not what he chose, IMO.  That just seems to be setting sellers up to fail.

How soon they forget the late shipping metric that is on the seller dashboard.  OR there was a period that ebay was giving delivery estimates for the item based on an average of when the seller shipped (printed a label) rather than the handling time and acceptance scan, and a lot of sellers were getting complaints about late deliveries when the seller and Post Office did everything they promised - but not what ebay promised based on their glitched up fantasy numbers.

Since we are entering tornado and hurricane season, do you really want to take the ebay risk.

I ship at the PO counter and do not enter tracking unless necessary for just such a situation.  Most buyers get the item before they notice there is no tracking.  The ones that do notice are often attempting to scam a freebie.
