Good Riddens Ebay!

Anonymous
Not applicable

After some very long thought, we have decided to stop selling on ebay after 17 years of doing so.  The managed payment system is a hassle, and they have at times withheld payments longer than usual due to an "unknown problem".   When we call customer service?  They say they do not know what the problem is, only that there is one.  We do not ship until payment goes through, and this greatly has held up some shipments and resulted in buyer's being unhappy.  Secondly, we always use tracking and signature confirmation.  But if that buyer lies and says the package was not gotten?  In the last year Ebay has let 2 buyers get away with this.  Each time they sided with the buyer, though we showed proof that the package was in fact delivered.  The first time it cost us $2000.00 .  This last time it cost us over $4000.00.  Ebay sided with both buyers and refunded them both, directly debiting our bank account.  The tracking and signature confirmation *should* protect seller's.  But we have learned over the years that ebay ALWAYS sides with the buyer.  And as of lately their selling policies have been completely unsupportive of seller's and the managed payments have also become a head ache.  Tired of losing money!  Good riddens ebay!

User Agreement | eBay

@mobley120  - sorry, my reference was about the "user agreement" applies to all of us as soon as we register on the site to sell.  I get that no one reads it (I have probably only truly read certain sections).  I get that people sell as a hobby or to clear out the basement or sell aunt suzie's clothes for her.  But the e-bay rules apply to us all, whether we want them to or not -  Casual seller, part-time seller, seller-seller, etc.

We have sold here almost 18 years (aug) and yes, it was very different when we started and yes, as a Seller, I was happier about how our obligations to a buyer were spelled out - but not everything was Utopian back then either.  I remember the exodus to the River....Sellers so sure that was the solution to everything.  (we sell there - 16 yrs and utopia is not a word I would use, personally)

I do wish some of what happens on this site were simpler, better laid out, much better communication and that buyer fraud was handled very differently.  I can wish all I want - e-Bay doesn't ask my opinion or care what I think.  If we want to continue to sell here - well, it is what it is, as they say.

As for the OP's situation, it is tragic.  My original comments were tied to the frustration that Sellers keep posting about not shipping until the monies hit their bank accounts, as the OP did in their original post.

Every Seller has the right to run their business (whatever you wish to call it ) the way they want and where they want.  There are lots of choices - not necessarily choices with better traffic.  It is guaranteed, those other sites also have user agreements that are binding, whether anyone reads them or not.  🙂

Re: Good Riddens Ebay!

"For someone who wants an ongoing hobby/small business/gig, eBay works fine"

I hope you don't mind me making a comment about a very small part of your post. And my intentions are not to be in a total dissent of your post, but rather just a slight variance from it.

It's my opinion eBay is no longer suitable for hobby sellers, the risk is too great to sell high dollar items, meaning the hobby seller is almost bound in a uncomfortable position of selling low dollar items, in which causes the hobby seller to increase the volume of  their listings by several fold, thus it'd seem to me to manifests itself into something more than just a hobby. It's my opinion eBay has abandoned the hobby sellers. And I look at the "gig" as meaning "now and then" like in, one might have a gig this weekend, but nothing scheduled for next week. And with that said, it's my opinion eBay puts that type of seller in a far worse position than what the hobby seller has been put in.

And as for small businesses, well, the term "small business" covers a vast field, for any business that does 25 million and under, in revenue, would be considered a small business.

Anyway,  therein your post where you've stated "it works fine," ah, that'd seem to be just an opinion, or perhaps self-recognition of what suits oneself.

And as far as the grammar stuff, you already know I'm the worse in the bunch, but my imagination never stops, in fact it makes my head hurt more often than not.

Re: Good Riddens Ebay!

I'm using 'hobby' seller as someone who just sells on the side on an ongoing basis - what they sell doesn't matter.  For instance, I sell as a hobby/retirement job.  But it's not something here or there - I sell maybe 1k/month, so it's ongoing.  If I just wanted a couple of hundred bucks a month, not sure if this the place - as I say, at that point it's getting to be a lot to get started here.

I remember when gigs were just here and there (my dad helped put me through undergrad school on his band gig money), but gig in this case has morphed to more of a part-time job with no benefits (contract labour) needed to put food on the table.  Unfortunately,  many of us (myself included) are/were in the gig economy.  I worked gig jobs for years when it became difficult to find full-time work for what I did at the level at which I did it.  One tries to work at those gigs as long as one can because employment is uncertain.  Sometimes I'd be working three of these little jobs/gigs at a time.

Someone who is a 'now and then' seller, or wants to sell in their hobby will have, IMHO, a more difficult time here now because it takes more to get started.  That was my point about folks wanting just to clear out once in a while, or gather up some quick money once or twice.  That's not so easy here anymore.  But doing so on a very small-scale, ongoing basis I have found is very doable - I sell in a bunch of places, though, so maybe I'm just used to hopping around.

Re: Good Riddens Ebay!

I have not even seen anything about the third party 'PayWithMyBank' part you referenced! I did sign up for a separate bank account as I have zero trust in ebay's ability to keep my info safe. They have had parts of their system screwed up for weeks on end and their programmers couldn't manage to fix.

I don't know how motivated I am to continue to do business with them after 20 years to be honest. I just now looked at the new rates since they are dumping paypal...and pray tell where is the savings they brayed about? .45%...that is the great savings. And it is zero if your item is less than $10 as far as I can tell. So in other words they cut out paypal so they can have all the money. I remember when you didn't have to use paypal and if you did where you could get those payments as long as they came from a bank account for NO charge! Thats when ebays charges were a fraction of the cost too. They are taking too much money with seriously less customer service and support for sellers. They clearly could care less about the sellers who built them. There are many sources where I can sell items for no cost. It is time to get comfortable with them, because ebay wants to take our money without allowing us to make a fair price on an item. It is pretty sickening actually!😒

Re: Good Riddens Ebay!

""user agreement" applies to all of us as soon as we register on the site"

Yes, such is very true, and there's one particular article in that agreement and those likened agreements, that will eventually need to be challenged, and until that particular article is defeated, there's isn't much of a prospect of any positive changes, now, or, in the future.

I understand the reasoning of your post, but there is one particular phrase in it that I do not care for: "it is, what it is," and, with that thought in mind and, with the consideration of Mother Earth, is the phrase "it is, what it is" proper, or, would the phrase "it is, what we make of it" proper? And, in that same thought process, and, with the consideration of a Higher Power, is the phrase "it is, what it is" proper, or, is the phrase "it is, what we make of it" proper.

And why I ask such, is because it's my feeling that if the phrase "it is, what it is," is deemed as acceptable, then humanity's destiny is quite bleak.

The above paragraph really doesn't requires an answer, it's just a thought.

Just too funny (dot dot dot dot)

Guess what, dot dot dot dot is even funnier. Hey, I have a friend that's really excellent at creating new words, but don't get your hopes up of getting a mulish grin, she's quite brilliant and she doesn't take kindly to Joe Dirt. But you're funny anyway, but I wouldn't worry about catching dat mulish grin from her word creations.

You're really on you own, and it's probably not by your choice. Good luck with dat

That's a great word.

I had some of those shiny little kid 'perfect spellers' as adults working for me when I was a senior editor.  Oh, they had memorized all the words, but they didn't understand language.  🤤
