I sell small craft items on ebay and that works well. I have a sectional sofa set which does not fit in my new house so I put it up for sale Local Pickup Only. I also put the 8 piece set up for sale on other sites and have received a TON of obvious scam inquiries. Someone on Ebay said that he wanted to buy it but that he lives out of state and wants to arrange for a transporter to pick it up. Several of the scammers on craigs list were also proposing to have a transporter come and pick it up.
My question is how high is my risk that I'll end up either not getting the money or ebay taking the money back from me after the sale? What happens if the transporter comes out and picks everything up, and then the buyer claims no one answered the door when the transporter came out? What if the buyer claims there is a tiny nick on the table but insists that I either discount it 50% or I pay to have it shipped back to me?
I get paid by ebay as soon as I ship items. When would I get paid on a local pickup transaction?

The inquiries regarding a transporter picking up a sofa are always scams.

In your ad, write that you will ONLY accept a cash payment. So if they want to send a transporter, that transporter better have the cash. Ignore ALL emails where the IDs have very little or no feedback. State absolutely NO electronic payment for this furniture. If the buyer complains, block them. You will have NO seller protection at all if you accept an electronic payment.

You cannot state "cash only", you MUST offer all the usual payment methods although you ALSO offer cash at pick-up.
I do local pick up fairly often, it's been years since any buyer did not pay through eBay and then come and pick up (it might be different for auctions).
To safeguard yourself you can insist that the buyer provide the QR code (scan-able or just the number) that eBay provides to buyers who purchase local pick-up orders.

Hmm, well 1st could you self report yourself to the moderator and have them remove that ebayers ID? ( that's against the rules of engagement).
Yes, you may list your large furniture as local pickup only and I would stick to that as the possible buyer really needs to view it. You can communicate with buyer thru ebay if they are interested and exchange information. They can pay in cash also. Now there is a QR code that ebay provides so you can complete the transaction with said buyer at your home via cell phone. ( that part I'm not familiar with, sorry as it's more recently implemented).
I've never used local pickup as a seller, only as a buyer twice, it's great and both times I paid thru PayPal as I remember.
Good luck to you!

You can request a cash payment, Ebay approves that, but the buyer can still use PP if he wants to. Its not a problem for Ebay to have the buyer use a transporter either. If he pays by PP, the buyer will be given a six digit QR code. He can give that to the transporter. So you have proof that the item was picked up.They recommend getting a signed receipt too. The only way a buyer can do a chargeback would be thru his cc, as Ebay does not require tracking for local pick ups.Ive had several pricey local pick ups thru Ebay with absolutely no problems. A few were paid with PP too. Since the transporter would be picking up the item and not inspecting it,Ebay says they handle snad complaints on local pick ups on a case to case basis and they are rare.

Would that include transactions on Ebay where they paid Ebay?

That's only true for eBay.
Other sites are more flexible.
EBay has a QR code option that allows you to accept cash and still have Seller Protection.

That is what I've done on other sites. I can't put cash only on an Ebay listing. Ebay wants to be sure they are not getting fee out of the transaction. I'm fine with paying ebay their fee as long as I'm protected as a seller to get my money.

you cannot put cash only in a local pick up listing. You can communicate that to the buyer when you exchange information. And if the buyer pays by PP, and the seller cancels he will receive a major defect to his account.

HI!
When I looked at the buyer, I noticed that they sell & have sold high dollar items. That would make me feel a little better who bought my item then. Hopefully they will treat me right is what I would hope then😊

That is not allowed. I think the notation they do allow is "contact the seller for payment options" or something along those lines. eBay does not allow a listing to go live without the buyer's ability to pay through checkout with any of the allowed methods. There is the "newish" QR code program as well that will make note electronically of an item that is "picked up."
@sirwes2_7
Just about ANY ITEM can be had for "free" (at the seller's expense) on eBay. Yes, the QR code may help for an "item not received" issue, but not for any subsequent "item not as described" complaint. You will be responsible for any return costs to MAYBE get your item back, just like any other transaction. Local for cash is probably your least problematic option, when it does NOT involve eBay at all. Be advised as well, when you post an item for "pick up only", eBay will often show the listing as "free shipping". That is additional 'fun' as well. Once again, LOCAL FOR CASH. Good luck!

That sounds good, Ive had great luck with local pick up items, and Im sure you will too..they go smoother than you think.

Thank you, that answers almost all of my questions. I did not know that Ebay had a procedure to confirm pickup. You sound like someone knowledgeable of local pickup. My only other question is after I submit the QR code confirming pickup, when will ebay send the funds to me? Are they going to hold that money longer because it is a local pickup transaction?
Thank you

You've been selling pretty consistently for some time now, so there should be no Hold on your payment.
Managed Payments transfers to banks on Tuesdays by default, although we can now opt for daily or monthly transfers as well.
