I've been selling on eBay for over 15 years..I'm a Top Rated Plus Seller with over 3100 positive feed backs, and I have a 100% positive rating. I pay close to $1000 a month or more in selling fees, and I have a store subscription...
I really, really have to thank eBay in a big way for this latest update. I had such a good thing going on here, we were both making money, and there's just nothing like that wonderful feeling of watching all your hard work go up in smoke; and realizing that this must have been done PURPOSEFULLY by the venue that you've been paying out the nose to for years.
eBay? If you were trying to put me out of business? For some bizarre, absolutely moronic reason? I can see very clearly now that you are going to succeed in doing this in a very big way with this new change.
I sell ONE OFF high end iPhones on this site, I have no repetitive inventory, and I RELY on the URGENCY that 3 Day BIN auctions create during a certain time every week to make all my sales.
My very tried and true method of selling all of my inventory weekly (which I HAVE TO DO to stay in business and keep cash flowing), was to list everything I buy through the week on Saturday morning on a 3 Day BIN which ended on Tuesday.
This is the peak buying time with my customers, and that 3 Day TICKING CLOCK was SO POWERFUL in creating urgency with them over the weekend? That typically I would sell everything I had in that 3 day time frame..And even if a few phones did not sell in those days? I would simply lower the price a bit and run another 3 day BIN auction starting on Tuesday, and by Friday? Everything was gone and we were both making a great deal of money.
This system I devised didn't happen by ACCIDENT. It took me a great deal of experimentation to find out what WORKED, and start seeing the kind of success I have seen over the past year or so of selling these phones. This took A LOT of hard work and persistence, but I got it done and I was making great money.
This mandatory GTC listing insanity started this week, and SURE ENOUGH, just like I knew it would - It has already destroyed my sales.
I have sold exactly ONE PHONE this week, with 6 other high ticket, high demand phones lingering there getting "watchers", but of course NO BUYERS - Because the buyers no longer have ANY SENSE OF URGENCY TO BUY. This is because there is no longer a TIME LIMIT on my listings where people HAVE TO ACT before a listing ends.
GTC Not only DOES NOT WORK TO SELL MY PRODUCTS, It is going to actively DESTROY my business.
This change TOTALLY undermines the system I have developed, TOTALLY ELIMINATES any kind of Buyer URGENCY or DEMAND FOR ACTION.
This entirely KILLS MY BUSINESS ON HERE...ENTIRELY. The proof?? I have not had ONE SALE SINCE TUESDAY - NOT ONE!! And I'm selling items that used to have an over 85% sell through rate on this site..
With GTC I can no longer TURN MY INVENTORY OVER QUICKLY, TO RUN MY BUSINESS..Unless of course I just want to sell everything for no profits, but obviously THATS NOT GOING TO WORK FOR ME...
I have been selling on this site for over 15 YEARS and I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT and what I am DOING...GTC listings are for STORE LISTINGS, and for sellers who have LONG TAIL INVENTORY....GTC DOES NOT WORK FOR SELLERS SELLING ONE OFF UNIQUE ITEMS THAT THEY HAVE TO TURN OVER QUICKLY!!! NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM!!
Everyone is complaining about the possible added fees with this change???...Let me tell you something? I would have taken a 2% FVF INCREASE OVER LOSING THE ABILITY TO SELL MY ITEMS COMPLETELY!!!
I CANNOT HAVE ITEMS SITTING THERE FOR 2 WEEKS, 3 WEEKS, 30 DAYS, 60 DAYS - THIS IS NOT THE WAY MY BUSINESS WORKS!!
And I CERTAINLY am not alone...This change has to be affecting AT LEAST 30% of sellers who GTC SIMPLY DOES NOT WORK FOR...GTC IS NOT A BLANKET LISTING THAT IS IDEAL FOR EVERYONE'S BUSINESS!!
WHERE IS THE RATIONALE AND DATA SUGGESTING THAT IT IS????
Do 30% of YOUR SELLERS have to LEAVE THE SITE eBay, or ACTUALLY GO OUT OF BUSINESS ON HERE BEFORE YOU FIGURE THIS OUT??
OR DO YOU HAVE TO DESTROY THE WEBSITE COMPLETELY BEFORE YOU UNDERSTAND THE RAMIFICATIONS OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING HERE??? I REALLY, REALLY WANT TO KNOW...
SOMEONE AT EBAY NEEDS TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION HERE TO CORRECT THIS AND GIVE US OUR SHORTER TIME BUY IT NOW OPTIONS BACK, THIS IS TOTALLY, TOTALLY INSANE AND YOU ARE PUTTING PEOPLE OUT OF BUSINESS!!!

Spoke with An EBAY REP today who told me that EBAY Spent MILLIONS on a Study from some Independent Company who determined the GTC was the Way to Go. Maybe Ebay should Ask for a Refund!!!!!. It Only works for Bulk Sellers Not All Catagories Especially Vintage and Antiques. I pay for an Anchor Store $300 a Month . 80% of My Sales are on 7 Day Listings. I am Fuming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I KNow what works for My Store for 11 Years....We Sellers Could Have Let them know what works for Free if they would have asked..... Heres another Thing I ask them to remove 2 Defects I Got For Tracking being Scanned along the Way.. I Had Uploaded it Way on time and Shipped Early, But when Uploading the Tracking 2 Items had a Digit wrong. I corrected it and told them to check the USPS Site to Verify Tracking all the Way and Delivery. BUT NO We Can't do that... Seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They went on to give me some Rhetoric That they couldn't because the Buyer didn't know it had shipped, But they Never complained either they got it earlier than stated. Where is the Little Shred of Help from Merchant services????????????? I Have Made My Sole Living on Ebay for 11 Years and this GTC Thing That is suppose to work GREAT Yeah Right, I have Made $138 This Week. Can any of you Live on that and Pay Ebay Fees if So Drop Me a Line and Tell me How. LOL So Ebay Spends Millions for Some Independent Company to tell them GTC is the Way to Go when We Sellers Could Have told them what works for FREE. Probably 80% of Store Owners it doesn't work for them. REALLY. The Silicon Chips Never Had to make a Living online in their Life. What Looks Good in Statistics Does Not Always Work with the Real World... I was Told Just Give it time!!! I don't Have TIME to Play with, Bills are Coming due beginning of Month. Ebay is trying to Turn us all into Robots Not PEOPLE Who Give Good Service to Other PEOPLE. Robots Don't Need a Roof and Food and Cars to drive and Utilities They Just ARE, with no needs. I ALSO STRESSED to the Ebay Agent I talked to That with this GTC When Shoppers Shop They LOOK FOR ENDING SOONEST. I Do!! He Curtly told me only Experienced Shoppers do that. What Now Ebay thinks all their Shoppers are Dumb or What? Ebays Ad "We Have Everything Under The Sun" Not for Long I'm afraid. EBAY IS A VENUE EBAY IS A VENUE, Thats What they say.. SHOP OWNERS AT THE VERY LEAST SHOULD HAVE DURATION CHOICES of 3,5,7,10,30 Day BIN LISTINGS. WE KNOW WHAT WORKS For Our Own Businesses. NOBODY has an Urgency to Buy NOW Knowing the Item Has 29 Days to think about it. REALLY. I Know I Sometimes Put Items in My Watch List that are GTC and Forget about them BECAUSE EVEN the WATCH LIST SHOWS THEM AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST. I Don't Know of a Single Small Business who Can Wait 30 Days for a Handful of Possible SALES. COME ON EBAY!!!!! WAKE UP PLEASE!! I LOVE MY EBAY BUSINESS. I AM NOT CORPORATE AMERICA. I Hate Amazon and All the Other Sites and NEVER SHOP ON THEM. YES I BUY ON EBAY, But Can't NOW No $$$$. That may or may not be true. We have no way of knowing if the CSR was actually sharing real information with you or something they made up in the hopes of making you feel better.

That is an assumption that is not true. That is your anger and dismay over this new policy talking. I do understand it and I respect that GTC is just not right for every seller. I really don't dispute that at all. I believe it.
...Heres another Thing I ask them to remove 2 Defects I Got For Tracking being Scanned along the Way.. I Had Uploaded it Way on time and Shipped Early, But when Uploading the Tracking 2 Items had a Digit wrong. That is correct. They aren't going to do that for you. Sorry it upset you so.
I Have Made My Sole Living on Ebay for 11 Years and this GTC Thing That is suppose to work GREAT Yeah Right, I have Made $138 This Week.
That can't possibly have ANYTHING to do with the GTC mandate. WAY WAY too soon. This only started on the 18th. Every single NEW GTC listing shows up as a NEW listing. And not all of the 30 day FP listings have ran their course either. Those posted prior to the 18th do get to run their full time. It will be quite a while before we know the impact for everyone being GTC will have overall.
Probably 80% of Store Owners it doesn't work for them.
What do you base that on? That is pretty high. I don't know how many sellers have stores, but there are over 25 million active sellers worldwide. I think this is your anger about this policy showing and honestly I do get that an understand that this is both scary and upsetting. When your financial situation is threatened, it more than rocks your world in a very bad way.
ALSO STRESSED to the Ebay Agent I talked to That with this GTC When Shoppers Shop They LOOK FOR ENDING SOONEST.
Your GTC listings will show up in Ending Soonest searches just like if it were a 30 day FP listing. So this you can take off your worry list. This function will work just fine with GTC.
I won't venture out and give you ideas on how you might be able to make GTC work for you, but if you do want to entertain ideas, just say so. Maybe some of us can help you adapt if you desire to do that.

With over 3000 listings, I don't know how you went so long NOT using GTC. Did you manually re-list every single item, month after month? It's so much easier to un-list old or unwanted listings than it is to re-list over and over and over again. There's even a link to those old stale listings, updated every single day, so you can easily find and revise the listing or unlist re-list that item fresh. There's an Out of Stock option that hides listings if you have zero quantity but plan to keep offering that item once your inventory is replenished. No listing or un-listing involved, just a revision of quantity.
If you've been doing this for umpteen years, why would you throw it all away just because there was a change that you were unfamiliar with and unwilling to learn.

You are totally missing the point. If he lists an item as a 3-day listing, as soon as the item is listed it "only" has three days remaing. Hence, the sense of urgency to get it now or very soon is created. When that same item is listed as a GTC listing, as soon as it is listed it has 30 days remaining. Hence, no more sense of urgency. The thing to do is to see if sales pick up during the last 3 days of the 30 day period. From my experience in the past of listing many items as 30-day listings, some as GTC listings and some as 10-day and some as 7-day, I have found the GTC listings, by far, have a much lower sales rate.

I am waiting to. I have closed my store and will wait out the first 2 weeks of April while I try other venues. I am not sure I will come back.

I didn't miss their point. I was trying to give them options that might work for them within the mandate. Each person has a choice to make. Continue to fight the change because they feel it just won't or can't work for them or try to find a way to work within it. That is a decision for each seller to make for themselves. Some will stay, some will go. Some will adapt, some won't.
But understand. To offer options on how working within the current rules may be of use to any given seller does NOT mean that the person offering alternative ways agrees with the changes. I have repeatedly said that I don't think this change will work for everyone and I do believe that. For me GTC works fine. For others GTC works fine. For others GTC is a hot mess for them. I get all of that.
So the choice you and others have to make is are you going to try and learn a new way of running your little business or not. There is no right or wrong answer. You just need to decide what direction you want to go.
That doesn't mean you have to stop voicing your opinions and observations to Ebay. They need to know how their sellers feel about the policies.
When that same item is listed as a GTC listing, as soon as it is listed it has 30 days remaining. Hence, no more sense of urgency.
The first time a GTC is listing, it shows up in the ending soonest search returns like any other 30 day FP would have. However the amount of time left on the listing doesn't show when you enter the listing. I think Ebay needs to add this and it may help some sellers move product more quickly.
The thing to do is to see if sales pick up during the last 3 days of the 30 day period. From my experience in the past of listing many items as 30-day listings, some as GTC listings and some as 10-day and some as 7-day, I have found the GTC listings, by far, have a much lower sales rate.
I think this is a very valid point.
In the meantime you might consider 7 day or 10 day auctions with a BIN price. I know that may not work for many sellers, but it may work for some. It's an option in at a time of only a few options.

...With My Store I Pay $300 Mo and Have 11,000 Free Listings offered Free I Never Have anywhere near that Many
Then why are you paying for the high priced store if you don't even come close to using the allotment of free listings? For example a subscription to a Premium store costs $59.95. That gives you an allotment of 1500 listings. So if you looked at this just specifically to the free listing allotments, the cost difference between the stores is 299.95 - 59.95 = $240.00. If you were paying for each listing, that $240 would get you 2,400 listings. So the 2400 + the 1500 with Premium stores = 3,900 listings. If on a normal month you are running less than 3,900 listings, then the Premium store is a better value for you. Of course if you are close to or exceed the 3,900, then the Anchor store could be a good fit for you. I don't know how many listings you average in a month, so you really need to run your own numbers using what you normally run in your store to see if you have spending too much money on the larger store or not.
For YEARS I have Used 7 Day Listings NEVER USED 30 Days Because for My Business it Did Not Work, and ALWAYS Had Sales with 7 Day Listings. That is the Model That works For Me. Of Course GTC Shows up in Ending Soonest, 30 Days From NOW. When I shop I use the Ending Soonest so I Don't Miss Something. because I Know if I Put Something GTC in My Watch List I Usually Forget About it BEFORE it Makes up to Ending Soonest. You Tell Me WHAT STORE or Any Business for That Matter Can Stay Afloat With Maybe a Few Sales Now Every 30 Days.
Are you suggesting that sellers that use GTC listings can't survive? I understand it is not a format that you normally use. You are in good company, there are lots of sellers that don't use it or have never used it. And you don't have to use it now. It is completely up to you. You do not have to adapt to the change. That is your decision to make. Whatever you decide to do I wish the very best for you.

As far as hoping eBay will walk back this change, this question came up at Chat today. One of the Blues stated in today's Chat that eBay has no plans to rescind this change.
You can read the Chat for today if you care to confirm this; there are other GTC related questions there as well.

You said you do 3 day BIN auctions. These haven't been eliminated, so the GTC change should have no effect on you.
No matter the length of a listing the sense of urgency isn't necessarily related to the expiration date, it's the fact that someone else might buy it first! A 3 day or 30 day listing is irrelevant when it comes to this, as when it's sold, it's sold. Someone watching or finding the listing has no idea if someone else may purchase it first. Buyers here know full well that when an items duration term expires, there's a good chance it will be relisted. Often times immediately. I'd see it constantly, especially on shorter duration fixed price. Sellers would relist over and over every 3, 5, 7 days so they could have that search boost in newly listed or ending soonest. An item would end unsold only to then be immediately relisted. No sense of urgency there.
I don't think I agree with this. I am over 50% with customers less than 20 feedback. I don't think that they know that listings are going to be renewed. In fact a lot of my sales where in the last few days of a 10 day listing. And I use the 10 day otherwise my items get buried by all the Chinese. Many times customers contact me after the item has expired to ask If I still have it. Time is defintently relevant to my sales. I have had one in a couple of days now.

@mvls1 wrote:All I can say is this seller says he was successfully running his business, making sales with a high sell through rate on a regular basis. Enter Ebay's new and improved GTC forced policy. Unless the seller has changed something else in addition to the new GTC listing time frame then that is most likely the underlying problem.
This is typical of changes that Ebay rolls out. Some sellers businesses are negatively impacted by the changes.
Two quick examples of epic fails:
1. The 14 day restriction on running markdown manager sales. Many sellers impacted with fewer sales and lost
revenue to Ebay. So many complaints that Ebay eventually reversed the change.
2. The new shipping label page is missing shipping options that are costing sellers REAL $. Example, no USPS
regional rate boxes available on the new shipping label flow, yet they are available on the classic label flow.
Why?
These changes, like the GTC never seem to be well thought out or checked for unintended consequences BEFORE they are implemented. One size does NOT always fit all or even most.
One last thing. All this nonsense about GTC being good for one of a kind in google search because it will not result dead links may help for a while, but what happens when a one of a kind item sells three days after listing? Same as before, another dead link. I do not think google will be any happier because it was a GTC listing that sold than if it had been a 10 day listing that sold. A dead link is a dead link.
Thats so right on the money it's almost eerie..One of the biggest things I've heard from all the kool aid drinkers of this policy is "It's going to get you more google search finds, so more sales"..Ok, but what you just said completely destroys that theory for people like me who are selling ONE ITEM AT A TIME..Once my listing sells, its gone..There is no GTC longevity, because I only have ONE PRODUCT to begin with in a listing. And guess what? So far in the past week? I have ended and then restarted my GTC listings 4 times!! And each time? That has resulted in an immediate sale..So my desperate attempt to mimic what I had before with short term auction bursts has actually worked quite well..
How is that going to help me with google, when I am constantly ending ,my listings to refresh them and get a sale? And how does that help me when my item is gone QUICKLY which I need it be, shortly after I list it GTC (which is what I WANT TO HAPPEN)??
The bigger play I see here, and the sadder one, is that eBay so desperately wants to move over to Amazon's format with this move? That it's almost pathetic.
I have news for you eBay: YOU ARE NOT AMAZON. And heres good news on that note as well: I have NO interest in selling on AMAZON, I LOVE(D) selling on eBay!!!
Why? Because on eBay I had the FREEDOM to do things like SETTING my listings duration, making my listing unique, communicating openly with my buyers, and a WHOLE HOST OF OTHER options (including selling USED or OPEN BOX items) which I simply do not have with Amazon - So I do NOT go and sell there. I know what I have here, and my buyers know what they have and they like the system, so we all have a good thing.
eBay needs to EMBRACE its STRENGTHS for sellers. We LOVE the options of duration, price, listing wording, the ability to be unique and stand out, etc, etc, etc. Many, many many sellers ALSO LOVE GTC...I did too at one point, until I started selling products that DID NOT FIT THAT MOLD. Then I had the option to EXPERIMENT with options that I COULDN'T FIND ANYWHERE ELSE, AND IT WAS PHENOMENAL!! I had the freedom to try all kinds of different techniques, durations, HTML options, and I could use these till I got it RIGHT on YOUR MARKET. And I DID!!
I really hope they think this through and see the devastation this is going to cause to NON AMAZON type sellers and change this back.
eBay: YOU CAN INTICE MORE BIG AMAZON TYPE SELLERS WITHOUT COMPLETELY DESTROYING YOUR SMALL ONE OFF, UNIQUE PRODUCT SELLERS...IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE EITHER OR. THE SMALLER, UNIQUE GUYS LIKE ME ARE WHO MADE YOU WHAT YOU ARE..WE MAY ONLY BE 30% NOW, BUT THAT IS A LARGE NUMBER. PLEASE START LISTENING AND NOT WIPING US OUT. ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL ON EBAY, AND THATS WHAT MAKES YOU GREAT!!
DONT DESTROY THAT IN ONE FELL SWOOP
I am so glad that you found a way around this and are still successful. But I think you are playing right into eBays hands. I think the real reason of this absurd update is to charge more because they know sellers are going to end their items and relist, burning up their allowed listings and then going over their limit and being charged for it. Why does eBay always have to be so constantly dirty???????????
