HI ALL...
New to posting, was a silent buyer/off and on seller for a few years. I am an ex engineer and currently a stay at home mommy for 2 toddlers. I started selling on ebay because I wanted to feel like I am doing something for me and to convince myself that I have a "job" that I can do at my own time (when it exists that is). Sales have not been good. So I started thinking of buying a new high end camera instead of my smart phone camera. I keep thinking there has to be an algorithem to this ebay. I am really wanting to reach a steady sales of 10 items a day. Whats the secret?. I just cant imagine that over 150 million users/buyers on ebay and my items are only getting 5 views in a month time....what am I missing?..advice needed here...really want to feel more successful doing this and want steady sales. Is there a magic number of items to list in order to get more sales?...
Thanks in advance.

Its about having the best quality at the best price, think like a buyer
How fast will shipping be cost. does the description give me cofidence in the item.
When pricing items I take into account what can a buyer buy this at right now anywhere on the web. is mine the cheapest if not is mine way better quiality wise. Or can I match the best price but offer faster shipping. your listing has to be the best in price, quality or fast shipping to win the buyer
One good way to find products to sell is storage auctions but thats a whole nother art.

I don't agree with the price statement ... or the fast shipping one either. I offer both Parcel Select (2-9 days) AND Priority Mail (1-3 days) on pretty much all listings weighing a pound or heavier ... 99% of all Buyers pick Parcel Select because it comes up CHEAPER than Priority Mail everytime. The other 1% I think through lack of experience pick Priority Mail ... As for item Price, I list items for what I want for them that includes profit and covers all fees, expenses, etc. I am never the lowest priced Seller with what I sell and at times I sell items over market value.
I think perception of the Seller with how their items are presented, their Feedback, etc. play a bigger role. I was looking for something today and found ONLY two Sellers on eBay who have what I want ... two, that's it and the item with shipping is about $ 40-$45. One in the US has over 21K Feedback but a ton of negs in the last few months. The other one is in the UK, again a high FB count but some negs PLUS comments about shipping issues to the US. Bottomline, will not purchase from either of them so I have to go elsewhere. Did they have what I wanted? Yes. Was it at a price I am willing to pay? Yes. Am I going to buy from them based on researching them? No ... errrrnt!

its important to note quality , you did not buy because of the quality of seller. if you had quality sellers to choose from what what be the decieding factor between them? Other then price, quality of item/seller or at speed at which you will get the item?
If people choose cheaper shipping I think that goes to price.
I think shipping speed is a factor in items of less scacity then rare items or item with less available to buy.

The secret is to sell items that:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do a lot of research, seriously, a lot, before I list items. The other day I came across a number of the same item I am contemplating listing (searched 'completed' and 'sold') . The item is currently a popular seller because of Christmas. What I found interesting is that all the items are being sold at pretty much the retail cost, with shipping being DOUBLE what it would cost me to ship the same items from here in Canada. Since my items are NWT (clearly visible tags), I'm not sure I could get away with listing at close to retail for something that is readily available at this time of year in the stores. So, I guess that's an example of people willing to pay the price.
However, when it comes to the "competition" on many other items, I am still blown away by the number of pictures of merchandise on dirty shag carpets, blurry or in dimly lit rooms, hidden against messy backgrounds, listed as 'new' when clearly used and/or damaged/dirty, with nominal descriptions. AND the stuff is selling, for decent prices!! I'll post clear, well-lit pics, good descriptions, fair prices & shipping, and my merchandise doesn't sell. So much for being more attractive than the competition.
Your points are excellent. All valid merchandising points. But for some reason, on eBay, doing everything right, doesn't necessarily work....

That's only because the eBay shipping calculator defaults to show the retail price. Your customers are comparing Parcel Select, which is an ONLINE price, vs the RETAIL price for Priority Mail. If they were looking at the ONLINE price for Priority Mail, they would choose it every time because for packages up to 18 pounds, the price are the SAME or just 5 cents apart.

My camera is a 1990's Sony Mavica, with a floppy disk, it takes great pics.
I am a Dude, so I buy new clothes every 10 years... ( just bought new undies )
You are in a tough market, and will be hard to be seen.
Now I don't want to discourage you, but making ebay a "job" is real work.

I was doing calculated mail priority and guesstimating the weight. I was told by 3 sources yesterday that free shipping drive sales so for the first time all my listings now are free shipping. Lets see if that makes a difference.

@verasplace I did the same thing for about 60 days plus changed to 60 Day returns Plus Seller pays return ... it made no difference. I hope you included $$ in your sale price for the shipping?

@partial*eclipse Thanks for that post but I don't think that is what Buyers see. Sure eBay may show the Parcel Select price and Economy shipping on the listing but at checkout and with calculator use I think they see eBay's Parcel Select pricing and then "counter price" Priority ... my pic below seems to support that. Buyer paid for Parcel Select but I use Priority when I printed the label because (in this zone to zone case) it was less than what the Buyer Paid for Parcel Select.
I have seen the same thing on Auction winner's Invoices when I send them. The higher Priority rate is listed as is the Parcel Select amount and again, they usually all chose Parcel Select but then I have the option to ship Priority because its either the same or less based on my discount.

Yes, that's exactly what I said: The prices that the Buyer sees in the listing and on their invoice are Parcel Select and the retail price for Priority, so of course they choose Parcel because it seems cheaper.
Your own price for Priority is even cheaper than Parcel Select because as a TRS you pay the Commercial Plus rate for Priority.

Do you really think anyone would tell you if there was a magic formula to guarantee lots of sales? Some sellers have over a decade invested in perfecting their sales model and they can't be expected to divulge their secrets and perhaps increase their competition. It takes a lot of time and work, but that's true of any successful business.

Before you consider investing in designer items to sell, please familiarize yourself thoroughly with the VeRO Program and the Trademarks Listing Policy.
If you watch the threads on this board, you will often find mentions of sellers having listings pulled by eBay for infringement--there are even some simple terms (like, believe it or not, Velco) that can cause issues.
