First empty package scam tried on me today...

So I got an eBay message that said they received a "sealed box" with "nothing inside" and "make this right".

I'm sitting here thinking about what I was supposed to have sent, and realized that I don't use boxes on those, because of the weight. I went to Chit Chats website (my shipping service in Canada) and got tracking information from them that shows I mailed an envelope weighing 12 oz.

I replied to the buyer that he must have me confused with another seller, because I never mailed a box. I gave him the chit chats link which shows the USPS tracking info, his city/state/zip and the type of package I mailed and weight there of. I told him the shipping service wouldn't record 12 oz on an empty box as the set weighs 10.5 oz (I mail lots of these, so I'm used to this).

I told him that I can assure him I mailed him coins, so if he received an empty box and he's sure I'm the right seller, to provide me with as much information as possible and I will open an investigation with USPS about mail tampering, being sure to give all sales order information to USPS for their investigation.

I do note, he didn't go through proper eBay channels to file an INAD against the item for not being in the box, he sent messages (to be under the radar, maybe his allowance to do INADs is up from doing too many).

Now the question is, will the buyer go away confronted with proof that they're wrong about what they received from me?

(BTW, immediate BBL, I don't care if he does come back to say he got me mixed up with another seller, I don't like the smell of this...)

Re: First empty package scam tried on me today...

Greetings...

Yes, the smell of this is quite pungent.

The buyer hopefully will go away. With your investigation and proof so far, he should be scared off. But if he does pursue it thru eBay and an INAD, it's a flip of the coin as to whether eBay will side with you or not, due to eBay's penchant for doing the wrong thing with at least an obvious mistake on the buyer's part or most likely a scam attempt.

You've done the right thing so far, so let's see what kind of common-sense character eBay has if you have to contact them about this on Facebook.

Cheers, (Duffy)

If it's put to a case, I would most likely refund because that's better than losing the case and getting a strike. I've contacted the coin shop to let them know this is going on (as they are involved in reimbursing me for any refunds).

The buyer isn't doing a case, which makes me wonder if it's an under radar technique.

If they leave a neg, I'll fight it. If I don't win when I fight it, I'll reply professionally. Let's just say I'm super aggressive when it comes to defending my selling account. I also won't keel over and give refunds unless I know I have to (as per eBay policy, I would lose the case, ergo it's best to refund first).

I don't think there is much of a question, who eBay will side with, if a case is filed.

Yeah, even with the proof regarding the weight. eBay just doesn't look at proof much, it seems. I guess it's too hard.

Re: First empty package scam tried on me today...

I know you're in Cananda. I'm in the U.S.

I see many issues with currency buyers that I will not go into.

sounds like you did the right thing to stand your ground and put the pressure on the buyer. Good job!

If you're willing to ship currency, I would suggest putting in your listings that a 'signature is required' (add that cost to listing). That will scare the scammers! I have currency for sale as 'pick up only' as I believe I stated before in another post of yours. I state, 'pick up only' and still get no hits or offers. I will get bidders who do not read the listing and then I have to contact them after the listings is pick up only and cancel.

I know there are many coin collectors locally around me, but they don't like having to pick up. ???? FUNNY!

Maybe take photos of the package with label and weight before shipping for your protection to fight an issue. Not a solid but shows you did your homework to protect yourself.

It wasn't a high scam item, just dumb luck that a scammer found that listing. I try to stay away from bullion or silver coins that are well known, like dollar coins. It wasn't a lot of money, but other sellers might have considered this to be a potentially large loss to refund.

The buyer has decided to message me all sorts of tirades calling me a thief, and a crook, and how I scammed him, and took his money and didn't give him anything in return, and how he knows it's me who did it. I'm just waiting for this to show up as 500 characters in feedback.

Re: First empty package scam tried on me today...

Well, if there is no case, then no problem, so far.

As stated before, this buyer might be out of options if he can't  file a case.

Re: First empty package scam tried on me today...

In situations like this I tell the buyer they have 10 seconds to disappear or they get reported for mail fraud, and I remind them its a federal crime. They always disappear, total silence.

Something to note here, USPS will take long time merchants at their word too, just the way it goes.

Re: First empty package scam tried on me today...

Sellers have sent these messages and then received a reply from the buyer that they found the missing items, along with a story about a roommate or relative opening the package first.

Thank you for your purchase, we are again sorry with the issues with USPS; We have filed a formal report with USPS and also with the local police concerning your empty parcel and will report back to you as soon as we know more. Thank you again!

I am so sorry to hear that your parcel arrived without the contents. I will do everything I can to assist you in this matter. I will file the lost/rifled/stolen mail report (the report is called something else now, you will have look this up for the correct name) with the United States Postal Inspectors on your behalf. Even in these trying times they usually respond with a case number within 24 hours. I will forward that to you when it is received so that you can track the progress of the investigation as well. Do you have a daytime phone number that I can include in the report? That way they can contact you directly as well.

I will also speak to your local postmaster and mail carrier about this package. If it had broken open, the USPS typically tags the box as such, so a photo of that stamp will actually help. Please keep the packing materials in case they are needed as well. Thank you so much for your cooperation.
