First Time Seller

Hello, I am selling my first item on eBay. It's a Canon T7i DSLR with accessories for $850. I just accepted an offer and was wondering when to know when the money is in my account. Also how to check if a buy is legit. I am planning to pay for the signature release when sending it out to ship, but what can I also do besides taking photos of everything to avoid the "I never got it" or "the box was empty" scam. How many photos should I take and of what? Can I call eBay to check on the buyer for any questionable prior activity? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

First off - don't bother with the photos, they are not accepted as any kind of proof because they can be faked so easily by nefarious individuals.

When you get the notice that it is OK to ship, that means the payment has been approved and it is processing.  The buyer at that time cannot revoke the payment or change it in any way - it's in the hands of the credit card company or processing through the ACH system.  You can ship.

The signature required is mandatory, so you're right on that, and you may want to also add insurance.

You can't call eBay for more information on the buyer - even if they have any, they won't release it.  You can examine the buyer's feedback and that's about it.

You can take 1,000 photos /videos.  They will do you absolutely no good in a dispute. Ebay does not accept photo/video evidence in a dispute.  They wont even look at it. Too easy to alter/manipulate.

I wouldn't recommend a new seller selling such an expensive item and i've been selling here for 22 years and i am not comfortable selling anything that expensive.

The truth is there is no way to protect yourself from fraud. Any buyer can file a false claim against you and get a free item  and you'll be out the money. I don;t mean to scare you but that's the truth.

Ebay is not a good venue for selling expensive items.

Never sell anything you're not prepared to lose.

Reread the posts because it is very true that, as a new seller, you are a prime target for being scammed and there is no way that you can prevent someone who is determined from trying to.  Even if you do 'everything correctly', you could be out your item and the money, as well as shipping - both ways.

Always 'know' if you can afford to lose what you list.

First, there is never a method of figuring out if you will be scammed or not. It's a hit or miss situation that all sellers have to face at some point.

Second, Canon is on the VERO list so you are at risk of getting a VERO policy violation from Ebay for listing/selling it.

@dandu-8270,

What was the item number for your camera?

I'm asking because I can't see any sold items in your history. I looked up recent sales in that price range, and I only found one sale (yesterday) since July 13, but that seller was not a first time seller, they had sold another item and received feedback for it earlier this month.

As mentioned before, a new seller with an expensive item is a scam magnet, so I wanted to take a look at the listing and see if there were any red flags.

Paypal managed payment etc...

Look up the address given on the net to see if it is a freight forward..

Did they ask for any thing extra such as gift cards??

It going to a friend as a gift thing??

Did they ask for you email so they can pay you???

These last three tell you this is a scam....

What are you talking about? There is no restriction on selling Canon equipment.
