First Negative Review In 25 Years

I've been selling on eBay since 1998. Have sold hundreds of items over the 25-year period. My feedback was 100%. I sent a buyer an item that contained a battery, and apparently the battery was not up to snuff. They immediately left negative feedback without contacting me. This dropped my feedback from 100% to 90%; I cannot see how eBay could figure a 10% drop after my selling hundreds of items, but whatever. At any rate, I tried contacting the buyer, offering to refund all the money in addition to letting him keep the item. The buyer has not replied. Any advice on how to proceed from here?

I will not reply to the feedback until I am pretty sure the buyer will not answer my communication. How long do I have to reply to such a feedback before the option goes away? I cannot find the answer in eBay's Help section.

If they don't request a refund & are so short tempered to leave a negative without trying to resolve, I would not be doing them any favors.  Some people just are useless to deal with.

@activated-charcoal    This reviews replies and feedback removal.   I know revisions can only done a certain number of times and within 30 days.

Whatever you do, do not reply to the feedback yet, try and ask for a revision, because once you reply to a feedback, it can't be revised.

This is not actually true but what is definitely likely is that if you contact eBay and try to get a feedback removed that is "bad" but doesn't actually violate a policy the csr is less likely to remove it if you have left a nasty/rude/whatever reply. Your plea that you are the nicest person and don't deserve the neg won't match up to the comment you just left.

Sellers have 60 days from purchase. (Altho, like you, i could not find the policy where this is mentioned, either.)

Buyers have 60 days from the date of delivery, or the estimated date of delivery, whichever comes first. If no expected delivery date is provided, buyers have up to 90 days from when they completed the purchase.

Re: First Negative Review In 25 Years

Before you give up, you should at least give it a shot and try an have your negative feedback removed.  Maybe Ebay will comp you one for being such a long-standing seller.  It certaintly wouldn't hurt to try.

The process is automated" My Ebay>Help&Contact>Request to remove feedback>Select Item associated with neg fb>

Re: First Negative Review In 25 Years

The last negative I got was a lie that can be verified by eBay & they would not remove it.  It was clear that I answered the buyer & gave a tracking #.  Buyer received the item only 3-4 days after getting the refund & never bothered to give me my rightful payment back.  Who deserved the negative?  lol

It won't hurt to try, but eBay doesn't "comp" - trust me on this.

Re: First Negative Review In 25 Years

I would use the remove feedback form and have it removed.

i have done successfully for the exact same reason and ebay removes it.

Select your reason as “something outside my control”

its outside your control because the buyer never contacted you or gave you a chance to make it right. You could also argue it must of been damaged during shipping.

Re: First Negative Review In 25 Years

I wholeheartedly disagree with this analogy as it pertains to sellers, especially not with a seller that’s been with eBay 25 years with no negative feedback.

I’ve seen restaurants go from great to bad under new management, but I’ve never seen the same owners just let their good restaurants turn into garbage. This seller has been on eBay pretty much since its inception. It’s the same person; it’s not like they sold their account to someone else.

Your analogy *is* relevant to eBay though. It used to be an enjoyable place to buy and sell, but now it seems like a totally different operation. I’ve also been a member for about 25 years, and until very recently, I had nothing but good things to say about eBay.

I acquired a lot of my favorite things here and I’ve also sold a lot when I wanted to trade up or if I needed money. Having been around since the beginning, I felt almost like part of the family, and I’ve never had reservations about recommending eBay for anyone looking to buy or sell.

But now, eBay seems like a cold, cutthroat operation out to milk every possible cent out of all users at the expense of long-term goodwill, always prioritizing sellers at the bottom. They make sellers prove themselves over and over, and seem to be trying to send the message that we’re lucky to even be here.

All establishments know that treating their regulars well is key to ensuring repeat customers and positive word-of-mouth reviews. A restaurant doesn’t give long-time customers shoddy service just because they figure they’re already entitled to their business, but that’s exactly what EBay’s doing.

eBay *should* treat people who have been here forever a lot better than they are. We helped build eBay. If someone’s had no negatives in 25 years, they shouldn’t be treated as brand new sellers. They should be given the benefit of the doubt unless they screw up, instead of making them jump through hoops to prove themselves worthy. That’s what they should do if they value loyalty and if they want us to reciprocate.

"If someone’s had no negatives in 25 years, they shouldn’t be treated as brand new sellers."

I have to agree with this. I've been treated by eBay like I just signed up last week. Not always knowing the best way to deal with scammers, and previously finding my eBay customers honest, I refunded one customer before she sent the item back. She then refused to return the item. eBay told her to ignore me!

Re: First Negative Review In 25 Years

Unfortunate, but I don’t see a

good reason to have the feedback removed.  Sure, maybe the buyer is difficult, but eBay asks for his opinion - it shouldn’t disregard it because seller feels it is too harsh.
