Fees collected

I guess by now others have realized that ebay is charging a fee based upon the total selling, shipping and handling and taxes.

Why are we all paying a fee on taxes which are paid by the buyer and is a pass through.

WHAT GIVES EBAY THE RIGHT TO COLLECT A FEE FROM THE SELLERS BASED UPON THE TAX VALUE OF THE ITEM SOLD.  IF IT IS A USED ITEM THEN TAXES WERE PAID WHEN PURCHASED NEW.  NOW THE BUYER PAYS TAXES AGAIN AND THE SELLER GETS BILLED A FEE ON THE TAXES.

Everyday someone posts about hidden fees and how dare they charge this or that.

Do you not pay taxes if you buy a "used" car?

Do you not pay taxes if you buy a "used" house?

Do you not pay taxes at Goodwill??

What gives them the "right" is the terms you agreed to and that every payment processor charges fees on the total sale.

We pay fees on the entire amount of money collected from the buyer.  eBay takes the taxes and sends it to the appropriate state for the seller, eBay doesn't do this for free we pay for this service. So they charge fees on the entire purchase +shipping + tax. I don't have a problem with it... makes it simple.

It does'nt matter if the item was new or used. Tax is required by the state in which the buyer lives.. eBay is complying with the tax laws of those states..As do Amazon, Etsy and all other online shopping websites.

Most knew that along time ago when the agreement was read.  I agreed to the terms when I started selling. We see about 10 of these same exact posts, every day the boards are visited.

We are very lucky that we as a Sellers don't have to figure out all the taxes and remit to each of the taxing States and Countries that are out there. You would end up spending way more time and money than what you pay eBay in the fee. Plus, if you are running a legit operation all the eBay fees are deductible from your taxes as an expense at the end of the year.

Sales (or whatever a state call it) Tax is on the transaction (purchase) : not the item.

It is a way to tax a dollar an easy hundred or more times... smart folks them law maker eh???

Please learn; Any sale in a state: even if you sell it for less is such that the transaction can be charged a sales tax.

How many posts is this now???

A few thousand maybe on the same gripe and misinformation causing it...

All stores even like Walmart and, Target, etc... are changed fees on the TOTAL amount the payment processor collects from a paying buyer.

That includes tax.  Ebay is no different. Ebay's system is collecting the  TOTAL buyers payment.

New or used it does not matter.  Do you pay tax when you ship at Goodwill or other resale thrift stores?

Lift your left leg at midnight to start off on the right foot. Happy new Year!

The Constitution.

A sales tax is a tax on the transaction, not the item. If an item is involved in 100 transaction, each of those transactions is subject to sales tax.

The buyer pays taxes on purchases of used items on eBay because that is the law for the state that has jurisdiction over the transaction.

It seems like any seller on eBay (or anywhere else) is able to familiarize himself about the fees on the venue BEFORE he starts selling.  It's not really a hidden dark secret.

What gives them the right? Well, for starters, they own the website.

I wish this discussion would just end. If you do not like Ebay policy then accept it or leave. Just like any expense a seller could adjust their selling price to cover selling expenses. In most cases it is the consumer that pays for everything.

Just wait until later this year when the shipping companies raise their shipping costs to cover the high cost of fuel.

I am sick of people complaining about the 1099K  and Ebay fees.  The real problem in this great country are the politicans who are destroying it thru greed and dishonesty.

Inflation was 8.9% this month and most people do not understand that if the inflation rate is around the same percentage every month the cost of inflation would almost be 100% for the year. That means if you made $100,000 (after taxes) this year, your money is only worth half that.

I sure people will be blaming Ebay next for inflation! IT IS BECAUSE OUR US GOVERNMENT IS BEING RUN

BY IDIOTS. (Both parties)  And I think America is a great country with huge problems cause by the government.

These folks seem to be coming out of the woodwork more & more

All I can say quit obsessing over what part of the ebay cut goes where and look at the total charges for making a sale, you might find they're not that bad

I think my charges for making a sale on ebay are reasonable, but that's just me

Maybe they're waiting for ebay to announce "You Talked We Listened" We're now going to increase our commission fee to 20% but we won't apply it to shipping charges or tax. There, all fixed

The "I'm leaving and I gotta tell you about it" threads would be numerous

And why are there so many sellers who've been selling for many, many years and are just waking up to how their fees are calculated?  That in itself is scary.

What gives eBay the right? Two things. They are the 800 pound gorilla in the room and state statutes say they legally have to.

A pawn shop charges tax on used items. Same for a salvage yard, antique store, or any one of a number of other business operations.

I do not like those high fees, dealing with the high cost of shipping supplies/shipping, and the risk of  being scammed with eBay backing up some low life so I chose to quit selling.

It's eBay's playground and ball. One has to either play by their rules, or as I have done, just back away from selling altogether without angst.

In my case, it does cost eBay something because what I made selling I used to turn around and plow it right back into eBay purchases; mostly antique motorcycle parts. I quit that completely.
