So I was shipping a golf bag recently to Kansas that I sold on ebay. Printed a label through ebay at a cost of $38. I then took it down to a FedEx Office and Print Center who accepted it. It delivered a couple days later and all was well until I noticed a $261 FedEx charge to my bank account! No contact from FedEx so I contacted my bank and asked what the charge was for or a contact number. They gave me a phone number associated with the transaction for which when I called the number had been disconnected! I asked the bank to investigate and they provided me a new debit card to protect my account. The next day I get an e-mail from FedEx saying I did not pay enough to ship the bag and that they were taking $261 more than I already paid out of my account! AFTER THEY ALREADY HAD! This is theft! They accepted and delivered the package! They did not have to accept or could have returned it but to charge me $299 to ship a golf bag! I am owed an apology and a phone call to explain why this was all handled so poorly! I can assure you this matter is not going to go away and it will cost FedEx in the long run more than $299! The $261 they took was unauthorized and I may look into criminal charges against them or at the very least file a complaint with the BBB and take them to small claims court! Ridiculous!

Did you get a receipt? I drop off items there quite a bit and always wait to get a receipt. Never had a problem either and I have shipped some large things. Yours seems way out of wack though. How did it ship? Overnight?
So you printed the label through ebay? How did they get your bank account then? Did you give FedX your debit/CC card when you dropped the package off? If you printed the label on ebay the charge will show up on your ebay invoice not directly on your bank account.
Something isnt right here. Your Card might have been stolen somewheres.
The Rats won.

Fwiw, the cost for FedEx labels on ebay is only and estimate and is subject to correction by fedex once they have the package in thier system. FedEx prices all packages these days by weight / dimension (whichever is the higher cost). They claim to weigh and check the actual dimensions of every package by lasers (the ones inputed by the shipper mean nothing). My guess is that shipping a golf bag you were charged for a large dimensional weight. I can't imagine shipping a golf bag anywhere for only $38 - but I could be wrong.

You said the first number you called was discontinued.
Are you even sure you are dealing with Fed Ex and not a scammer?
Call the 1-800 number and speak to someone at Fed Ex directly to see if this is legit or if someone hacked your personal info

@sandandtone Apparently the FedEx Overcharge issue has not been addressed by eBay even though it was brought to their attention earlier this year by many Sellers. What happened to you however is a whole new level of "wrong" ... I known for a fact that there is no way a set of clubs would push you anywhere near that kind of $$, PERIOD.

I have a FedEx account and the only way for them to extract funds from me would be via my cc that I insist that I keep on file, so how they had access to your checking account is a mystery. When I use FedEx for shipping I am billed one a month.
As @threshold.sales.group stated, FedEx will double check the weight and size of the box and bill for the difference. I had it happen to me once and choose USPS for the shipment because it was cheaper. FedEx will not auto bill unless the account owner has given them access to an account. And if you use FedEx here, it is eBay's account and the difference came from your account that you had on file with eBay I suppose. If no account, then they will paper bill you.
I am sorry that this happened - but if you want to use FedEx, you should have your own account, that way you have better control of funds coming and going.

@postingid2017, @sandandtone I shipped a full set of irons in July and the Buyer paid less than $ 15.00 USPS Parcel Select. The package was wide & long but no high as I split the set in half and made two layers ... one layer the heads pointed left and the other layer they pointed right. So even if you added the woods it would not balloon the box so badly that a huge charge would apply.

think he said a gold bag... so yes the size of the box would be much bigger..they can be rather large bags..with some weight...so that may be part of the issue...BUT it does sound odd the rest of the story...about phone number disconnected and the money came out of his bank account...not via ebay..so??? there must be more to this....
$261 is just way too much , anyway you pack a bag...that is for sure.

Ok lets just say that without any investigation "Fedex has done did it again," there still remains the question of how...
The only way I can see 'fedex' taking that amount would be they took it out of your paypal and then if you didn't have the funds Paypal in turn took it out of your checking account. That is possible however somewhere, somehow, these accounts HAVE to be linked *OR* fedex had to have your checking account information upfront.
There's simply no way they just took funds out of your account out of the wild blue yonder.
So it's either that or you've been scammed.

They accepted and delivered the package!
Two things must have occurred here, both of which may have been legitimate.
1. Accepting and delivering the package does not mean that they accepted the label you printed from ebay. Read the small print. If your label is incorrect, you will be charged. And the counter person is not the place it gets checked out, that happens down in the guts of fedex somewhere.
2. If you paid for your fedex label directly from your checking account, with a debit card, then any overage would be legitimately collected in the same way. But it doesn't happen that way on the normal ebay path.
2a. If you bought your label through ebay, in the usual way, fedex has no way to charge your bank account. They can force the charge, but it has to go back through your paypal account which in turn might charge your bank account (and be legitimate).

I wonder why no company has shown up to disrupt the shipping/mail delivery business? The prices make no sense. Shipping based on dimensions and weight can be very unfair depending on what you are shipping. I once purchased a lot that came on a pallet with about twenty big boxes and weighed 884 pounds. UPS Freight charged me less than $150 for it. I think the total was $143. And you ship a golf bag and you get charged $261????
These days I shop around checking all possible prices before I ship. The USPS Priority Mail depending on how close the person is too you can be cheap. You just have to do your own research. Depending on eBay pricing for services like FedEx and UPS is a bad idea because it is just an estimate. Also if you ship by FedEx and UPS they will adjust the pricing if they find out it is heavier than you paid for.

You are correct as in this case I did ship direct from FedEx's website with mt debit card. It was a large golf bag granted but from SC to Kansas at 40 pounds there's no way $299 makes any sense. Regardless I did not give them carte blanc to come back and charge me without knowing how much or why? I called customer service this morning and they were quick to give me back $150 (half) however I have filed a dispute with my bank who said they will take care of it. Nobody should ever be able to draw money from a checking account without communicating first. That's what set me off. Not my first run in with FedEx which I have learned if you do choose their Smart Post and it get's damaged there is no claim process. They will only honor claims for lost items while in their possession. They'll blame USPS for any damage as they transfer and depend on the USPS to deliver from the nearest Post Office to the final destination.

Prediction.
Fedex will show you where you agreed to exactly what they did, by clicking some "agree to terms" button.
Your bank may or may not honor your request to declare this charge unauthorized. Banks are all over the map on this kind of thing with debit card. Credit card, guaranteed win for cardholder.
If you do win your UA case, you will be billed by FedEx for the amount you won, perhaps with some increment for causing trouble.
If you don't pay FedEx what they bill you for, they will turn it over to collections.

That is ridiculous! I have had two eBay shipments where they tacked on an additonal $10-20, and that made me mad enough to stop using them.
As far as golf clubs go, my husband has a Fed Ex account and ships his bag and a whole set of clubs back and forth between Ohio and Arizona. He has never paid more than $50.

FedEx is billed on delivery. eBay is only an estimate. A LOT of sellers fall for dimensional weight. ANYTIME I ship anything over 12X12X12, I stop and think is this something I really want to do.
Yours seems a bit pricy though.
