I shipped a baseball bat via Fedex on april 22nd, which was delivered on april 30th (yeah, slow service). I had inputted the box dimensions and weight on the Ebay shipping page as always. The lowest cost (for standard service) was FedEx for $12.59, so I went ahead and printed the label and shipped the package out. Now over the weekend Ebay notified me that the shipper has added an additional shipping charge of $35.93 for a new grand total of $48.52. This is ridiculous. I had inputted the dimensions and weight, so they know what they were receiving, but I see on the Ebay site that irregular or long items may cost more. Well then, why even have me enter any dimensions. As far as I am concerned when I entered the size and weight of my item and they offered me a price to deliver it, they comitted to a contract between me and them. I looked at competing prices and USPS would charge approx. $15 and USPS would charge approx. $19. This is just a big rip off by FedEx. I will never use them again.

eBay calculates rates based on package weight and dimensions, including any surcharges for weight and dimensions.
The main reason cost adjustments are applied is for irregular packaging - things like using round tubes, or polymailers over a certain size, etc. It's all in the FedEx service guide.
Another common adjustment reason is if the box gets skewed during shipment and that impacts dimensions.
How did you ship the baseball bat? Was it in a round tube or a triangular box (both subject to nonstandard packaging surcharges)? Was it in a rectangle box that could have skewed to a parallelogram which would affect dimensions?
View the label details and on the bottom right expand the section that says "see cost breakdown." If there's an additional handling charge then the adjustment was likely for nonstandard packaging. Would need to see this info (screenshot below) and also need a physical description of the package to be able to help more:

This happened to me several times and I will never use Fedex again. When Fedex displays a lower shipping rate it's not worth the risk to use them as they are not honest. Even if you enter the weight and dimension correctly they will randomly add additional charges. If you contact Fedex they will blame it on ebay. If you contact ebay they will blame Fedex.
