Fear of getting scammed

I’m a new member, have zero feedback, thus opening me up to scams. Constantly getting offers well over asking price.  But just today, had a “buyer”, offer $10, on an item I have listed for $3, and also hasn’t even been bidded on.  I tell him my reservations ( although he has 100% feedback zero are neutral or negative), but he was rude in his msg when I declined offer and stated why.  So I type his handle in at EBay and he has nothing for sell, yet his feedback from booth as a buyer and seller are chalk full of glowing comments…? What do y’all make of this?

Scammer.

Block.

Not exactly. Some buyers can be rude, some are not. But that doesn't mean that the buyer is really a scammer.

WOW! Why on earth are you telling potential buyers what you paid for an item? And telling them you assume they are scamming you?Don’t do that! As for the Frost bust just listing it as “up to 12”” doesn’t tell me anything. Is it 11” high or 3” high? Details are really critical. You can edit the Frost piece to add exact dimensions. Width might also be useful as the buyer may have a specific place to display it. Wishing you good luck selling on eBay!

Did you or did you not put a "Best Offer" on this Auction? I'll answer for you, you did. Someone takes you at your word, makes an offer, and you call them a scammer. Really!

S/he is not a scammer and it is not a BIN, it is an Auction.

Just like @tdumonde2014 said, you allowed offers, got an offer, declined it, then you called him a scammer? That is the recipe for negative feedback and a horrible reputation. Next time when you're about to list an auction, really think about if you want to allow offers or not.

Frankly, I'm of the opinion that being overly fearful of being scammed is a detriment to yours or any one else's eBay selling carrier.  Let's face it, it takes some guts to be in any type of business and as the saying goes, "never let them see you sweat."

By "...offers well over the asking price" are you talking about offers being made on fixed price listing items or those being sold at auction in auction style listings?  In the first I would be extremely wary of someone offering more that my stated price and put them on my BBL immediately without further communications with them.

On the other hand, if this is an auction style listing that has the BO option attached to it, the starting price that you set is not the asking price but merely a starting point for the bidding.  In such cases it would be reasonable to offer more than the starting bid price.  In fact, if they didn't offer more than that I'd probably block them as well for shear stupidity.

One thing that you need to remember about offers made on an item being sold at auction.  That is that once a bid has been placed all offers become void and you can no longer accept them.  The ones making such offers would then have to bid on the item through the normal bidding process.  The selling price being determined by the bidders in competition among themselves.  (Oh!  It should be noted that any offers made would not automatically convert to bids and so those that made the offers would have to place bids themselves.)

By the way, you don't have to explain why you decline an offer.  Frankly, I wouldn't.  Remember, they can smell fear and inexperienced seller's usually have quite a bit.  The trick is not to show it.

@timeoftheyear  Don't cancel - eBay will automatically cancel for you after 4 days if the buyer has not paid, and give the "buyer" a non-paying strike against their account.  You will run into this from time to time.

Welcome to eBay the home of scams.  If you don't get scammed by the buyer eBay will scam you out of your money instead.  Best advice is don't risk more than you are willing to lose.

Being a new seller is NOT easy on here, that's for sure.  Just be sure you let eBay have the non-payers.  You also might want to get rid of auctions and best offers and just do fixed price/immediate payment required until you've gotten some feedback and experience under your belt.

You have a traditional auction running, he's offering you $10 to bypass the auction process so he can "buy it now." I've had people do that on a number of occasions in my years on eBay and I've often obliged. Be sure to not only check their incoming feedback but also feedback left for others'. I'm not sure you can see their outgoing feedback on a phone because eBay is poorly designed and poorly run, but you can definitely check outgoing feedback on a PC. I look at both incoming and outgoing feedback before considering an offer, regardless of whether it's a best offer on a buy it now listing or in a scenario as you've described. If they're quick to leave negative feedback for seller, I decline their offer and block them.

Anyway, back to the topic; the bottom line is, you're pretty well safe as long as the transaction stays on eBay and you don't make the deal outside of eBay, which can get you banned. So if you wish to proceed with this individual, set a buy it now price to your auction listing and let them know.

This person does NOT have a Buy it Now price, they have a traditional auction with an opening bid of $3. I've had people make offers above my opening bid so they can bypass the auction process and get the item they want. Nothing shady about that.
