Extended Time Auctions. Good or Bad For eBay? Would you use them or bid on them?

I have accepted the challenge to post this topic.

It was suggested that a Fire Truck be on standby.

I live in a remote location with a volunteer Fire Service...however here we are...

I remember when the way to prevent shilling on eBay was to be honest and fair. And I know they cracked down on it after a while.. and I could swear that for a time, they warned us that if we tried to do it, their high-tech shill-detector algorithm would bust us for it.

I really don't know how sophisticated it is or how well it works because I've never shilled on an auction. I do know that I've sold items to friends of mine and never been busted for it. It seemed for a while in the mid 2000's that eBay was trying to tell us our friends weren't allowed to interact with us here, and they sort of reeled back that attitude.

I believe you if you say it works poorly.. but I still bet you they spent a ton of money on it!

From recent experience.  An item I wanted which she had a reserve on.  No one else was bidding.  Woman admitted her boyfriend opened up an account to bid me up to the maximum, so I could purchase it.

So you hadn't reached the reserve, but decided to bid back and forth with this person? Wow, that makes no sense.

Unless she placed a hidden max bid and the BF bid it up to reveal a bid over the reserve..

Not possible.  If a proxy bid is over the reserve the the selling price automatically jumps to the reserve, even if it is more than an increment over the currently showing high bid.

Any bid that meets or exceeds the reserve causes the price to increase to the reserve amount. You don't need a competing bid to meet a reserve.

The rule is the same no matter when you place the bid, so I don't understand your comment.

My comment was: I must have never placed a bid on an auction with a reserve.

If I snipe, I place ONE fairly high (max bid)  If I win, I pay. I don't recall ever seeing that I was bumped to a reserve price.

Meaning, I have no experience with it.

I have seen the "reserve not met" on other auctions I suppose they didn't bid high enough to reach the reserve- that's where my misunderstanding of it came from.

In thinking about this; I recall a buyer posting thinking something was off.

They bid & it immediately jumped much higher, they thought the seller could see their hidden max-

It was a reserve.. So their bid was bumped to the reserve price..

I hadn't recalled that when I replied..- DOPE  Brain damage..

I wanted the item at the reserve price she listed it at.  It was an extremely good deal that I would have hit BIN in a minute.  But because she set it up that way, you cannot bid against yourself.

As we've already explained, any bid that meets or exceeds the reserve will raise the price to the reserve amount. If you consider that "bidding against yourself", then yes, you can bid against yourself in a reserve auction if, and only if, your bid meets or exceeds the reserve.

Sorry, no. I'm really shocked that you don't understand this, given your experience.

Here are my thoughts on the subject (all are on the NO side)

1) Extending the auction time keeps buyers (that follow the policies) from moving on if they are outbid and no longer want to participate.

1a) Those buyers that do not follow policy and go on to bid on or BIN a different item will cause more non-payments and cancels if there are last minute bid retractions and they end up being the winner.

2) Sport bidding. There are enough bored trolls out there that will just keep bidding on something with no intention to pay.

3) Nuclear Bidding. There are plenty of bidders out there who think entering $1000 as their max bid on a $100 Item is a good idea. Nibblers using the extension could bring that "good idea" crashing into reality for the nuclear bidder, causing more non-payments and cancels. We have seen it on regular auctions where 2 nukers had the same "good idea" 😞

4) Bid Retractions. Besides the points in 1 and 1a, where does the line get drawn on the timing of bid retractions on an extended auction? Since there us no set end, what does that do to the 12 hr/1 he rules.

As a seller ... I really don't want to have to sit around and wait for a never ending auction. And then have to do the whole UP I process for those who got caught up in it. Or process the "Please Cancel because I bought it elsewhere".

G-G-G auctions usually require a buyer's premium. And saying "oops" will get you blacklisted from reputable Auction houses if you do it more than once.

Even eBay's "Live Auctions" require the buyer to register and have a billing method on file ..

Re-reading my post ^^ up there^^

Those reasons are the reasons I don't like auctions, period.

Never mind extended auctions LOL
