I got a letter in the mail today from a buyer, with zero feedback, who demanded his money back because he claimed the vintage open box kit he bought was incomplete. The listing said it was open box and that completeness could not be guaranteed. There were also several photos displaying the entire contents of the box. I just thought it was weird that he didn’t message me through ebay but instead mailed a letter through snail mail. Never happened before.

May have been a guest account on eBay that they can't access anymore. Or just someone very technologically illiterate (the snail mail letter backs that up). I wouldn't do anything unless you get a message on eBay.

I get thank you notes occasionally. My guess would be that the buyer was kicked off ebay or did a guest check out maybe and this is the only way he has to threaten you.....file 13 it.

An online transaction should be kept online. IMO

Apparently your buyer either can't read or didn't read.
In either case it's on them not you.
As others have said, do nothing unless it comes through the eBay system.

Approx 10% of the orders I've received in 12 years, are from buyers that have been here for years, with 20,40,100 feedback but they have NO CLUE that 'messages' are a thing and that they should reply and/or send that way.
If I were you, I would print out the listing that shows what you stated with picture and snail mail it back to the buyer.

Do you have one of those shredders that can handle photographs as well as paper?

I just have one question about this suggestion. Why?

I had a buyer send me a letter snail mail too. The guy had really lousy hand writing, I can decipher a doctor’s chicken scratch but this buyer’s not so much. I couldn’t make heads or tails of it.
I filed it in the circular file. If that buyer had some issue he could easily message me or open a case through eBay.
I never heard a peep from him again.

I received a letter in the mail from a buyer once. It was about 7 years ago. It was peculiar... the best I could make out is that he wanted to buy more of what he originally bought. I didn't know why he didn't just buy it online again, it was still listed. I think he said his assistant bought it for him. I had no record of the sale, no record of either name. It was about 9 months before. But he did have my address.
It was very odd, to say the least. It didn't make total sense. I didn't know if dementia was involved .. or he was somehow confused ...but I ignored it. And never heard from him again. I suggest you wait until you hear from your buyer again through ebay. And only then would I answer him back. You need to have a record of all correspondence. Maybe he'll go away like mine did! 🤞

That would be funny in the abstract, but I wouldn't do that actually.
But yeah, some people are really confused, like the ones who leave questions as feedback. 🤔

Any contact with this "Buyer" would result in nothing but encouraging him and
causing future issues.

I would ignore the letter.
If the buyer wants to pursue the matter, they can do it the right way, through ebay.
