I just realized today, after selling something for my sister and seeing her money reduced from $44.00 to $35.34 that ebay is charging their fees ( which because this was media is 15%?#!) on the shipping and the taxes as well as the selling price. I am of the opinion that that is a really deceitful practice as the seller makes no money on either of this, but I suppose this is ebay's handling fee for the shipping services and the paying of the taxes. Just ridiculous though.

And they published the allegedly deceitful practice for all to see. How dare they.
Final value fees
We charge one final value fee when your item sells, and you don't have to worry about third-party payment processing fees. This fee is calculated as a percentage of the total amount of the sale, plus a per order fee. For orders $10.00 or less the per order fee is $0.30, for orders over $10.00 the per order fee is $0.40.
The total amount of the sale includes the item price, any handling charges, any shipping costs collected from the buyer (some exceptions apply), sales tax, and any other applicable fees.
An order is defined as any number of items purchased by the same buyer at checkout with the same shipping method.

The great thing about eBay fees is that they're voluntary.
Don't like them? Don't sell on eBay. Problem solved.

eBay fees aren't hidden. They are on the total amount eBay collects from the buyer. Item cost, shipping and sales tax, if applicable.
Why are you just finding this out?

When you include eBay sales as reported income on your 1040 you can end up making even less.

Yes, EBAY charges selling fees on total amount (purchase price + shipping + sales tax) plus 30 handling charge. Could also be additional fees if item was promoted or international (if shipped through EIS...EBAY waives the international fee).
Nothing is free....EBAY negotiates lower "shipping costs" with FedEx, UPS, USPS on the Seller's behalf (it takes staff to do that). EBAY handles all the bookkeeping involved with collecting and distributing "sales tax" to all the states.
Also be aware when you sell items for "other people" that will be reported to IRS as "your revenue". Whatever name and social security# on the account gets stuck with the tax liability.

Not deceitful at all. eBay fully discloses their fee structure in the seller fees policy. Perhaps you should read it. Selling Fees

Is this the first complaint that I have ever read on the community board about media fees at the 15% level? I read so many about the lower tier fee under 13%, but always this one was ignored. But really, you have to complain about the US Postal Service and their unsubstantiated rate raise on commercial parcels at and over 12oz to 1b, including zoning, and the media rate rise as well----that is the actual hit, not so much the eBay fees. Much larger parcel USPS Ground Advantage rates became better though, media and otherwise (I want to dump all my US Priority boxes as they just sit there now).

It's a good idea for sellers to keep up with changes on the site they sell on.
There's nothing deceitful, Ebay tells you the fees are based on the total amount.

FVF on the shipping portion has been in effect for over a decade.
PayPal was charging a processing fee (lower than eBay) on the sales tax amount prior to eBay taking over buyer payment processing.
The surprise shipping/tax charges also applied to those other 30 sales that you have made in the past 90 days.
The 15% applied to some of those other items sold.

Ebay is very transparent about the fees they charge us for everything. When you create a listing, there is a place just above the post button to view the FVFs for that listing. The FVF structure is very clear on the Seller Fee policy page and if you view your MP account summary, on the right you can see the recent charges to your account.
Nothing is hidden from you. You may have chosen not to look, but the details are available.
As I'm sure others have said, we have been charged FVFs on shipping since 2011. So you have paid it for over 12 years now and this is the first you have noticed it.
As to the fees on sales tax, they started charging that in August of 2020 as they started brining sellers onboard to MP. So once you were in MP, you paid Ebay the fees on taxes paid by the buyer.
Before that, when PayPal was our Money processor, we paid them for the money processing of our money received from buyer. The total amount received from the buyer to include sales tax.
Ebay has not been "deceitful" to you or any other seller in regards to selling fees. You made a conscience choice not to pay attention to the details before this. Now you want to blame this on Ebay when they were telling you all along what the fees are, you just chose not to pay attention.
Here is the summary of your payment account. Notice on the right side, the DETAILS of your recent transactions affecting your MP account.
https://www.ebay.com/sh/fin/summary
I encourage you to review this page. And please come back if there are any other rules that you recently discovered that have caused you to be concerned. We can help to guide you on them.

No to quibble but the eBay fee on books and magazines is 14.95%.
A penny here, a penny there. . ..
