Ebay doesn't support Sellers

For the high fees and shipping costs Ebay tacks on to your sale, you would think they would support Sellers more than they do. I had a buyer who decided he didn't like the product sold to him, filed a claim, and Ebay sides with him and charges me for the return and shipping fees. Even though the auction stated NO RETURNS. Total **bleep**. I'm done with EBAY. I'm going to find a different auction site. SELLER BEWARE!

Tough lesson learned... 'No Returns' does NOT mean No Refunds.

 

To keep this from happening in the future, change your listings to 30 Day Returns. In a buyer's remorse case, you can deduct the shipping charge from the refund when the item is returned to you.

eBay does not "tack on" high shipping fees. In fact, many times eBay's shippin costs are cheaper than buying postage directly from the USPS.

Unfortunately, you can put no returns accepted all you want in your auction descriptions, but, eBay doesn't back that.

The Money Back Guarantee terms override a seller’s terms, even if the buyer’s reason is false. Ebay’s primary focus on the platform is the buyer’s interests. Sellers must protect their own. 

 

Ebay sides with the buyer 95% of the time at this stage, but sellers have 30 days to appeal the decision. 

In general, on eBay, it is safer to offer a 30-day buyer-pays-return-shipping policy than risk an unhappy buyer opening a bogus Not As Described case to force a refund. When a seller fights such a case, eBay has some tough penalties if they find for the buyer. Then the seller finds they have a defect leveled on their account and get charged the Final Value fees. So it is just not worth it to fight the return.

I bet Mercari is going to get a lot of new sellers in the next 3-6 months. eBay made it clear they only want high-volume business sellers. As it stands I barely make much after postage costs, Paypal fees & eBay seller fees are factored in. Off an item I charge $6 shipped for I get maybe $2.50 and it's barely worth it, but I have to price it low to get any interest because fair pricing turns off buyers. If I get that little for it in the end I may as well throw it away. I've already had to chuck a tool in the trash because even pricing it at 50% below the cheapest current listing only got watchers but no buyers. I don't have infinite storage space.

 

The watch system is only used by "market value" sellers anymore, it's amazing when I get an item with 5-8 watchers, prices a lot less than the next cheapest listing, but it's not selling. I'm convinced the search algorithm selectively shows items randomly in a search, that "we his stuff we think is irrelevant" "feature" on every search I make is likely hurting sellers who have their listings hidden by eBay's automated system and I doubt most searchers even click the option to show those listings.

 

Forget separate shipping- it puts buyers off because they can't get an extra penny in eBay Bucks if it's not all one amount.

 

They force best offer on too many sellers who don't want it, convince buyer they're purchasing eBay stock rather than the personal property of a seller, override "no returns"... and for all we know they can send a box of rocks back, change the postage label with a different address so it goes to an empty building in your city, and still get their money back if the online scan shows delivered to your zip code. The chance they'd be punished is less than 1%.

 

Sales tax has also scared off buyers. Likewise it's putting me off when I have to pay that much extra on a purchase now on here, when I can go to another site/store and not pay it. They charge it even on overseas purchases, so why not go to Ali or Wish to buy those same items without the extra charge?

 

I'm relocating to Mercari shortly. I have to, since they'll force managed payments onto me in 1-2 months anyway(genuinely surprised they haven't slapped it onto me already) when they slowly make all sellers use it and I refuse to use it.

Ebay does not have anything to do with your shipping costs.  The seller selects shipping methods for their listings.  Those carriers have their own rates that Ebay does not control.  For some they have been able to negotiate in our behalf for lower rates which we all should appreciate as some of them save us some good amounts.

 

Since we are B&M's the only option a buyer has if there is an issue or some other concern about the product, they have to file a claim.  They can't come in and discuss it with us.  But you are right, Ebay will typically rule for the buyer if a seller tries to fight a claim.  And that really isn't something you should do.  You should just process them.  Because when you ask Ebay to step in and then they rule for the buyer, you will not get your FVFs refunded and you will get a defect on your account.  So it is best to just process them.

 

The return policies options are as follows.

 

  1. No Returns
  2. 30 day returns w/ buyer pays shipping
  3. 60 day returns w/ buyer pays shipping
  4. 30 day returns w/ seller pays shipping, AKA Free Returns
  5. 60 day returns w/ seller pays shipping. AKA Free Returns

 

With option number 1, No Returns the seller can completely deny taking a return for a Buyer's Remorse Return Request.  Or if they want to they can accept the return and have the buyer pay the return shipping.  If the seller so chooses they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer.

 

On options 2 & 3 the buyer is responsible for the return shipping on a Buyer's Remorse Return.  Plus if the seller so chooses they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer. As of October 1st 2019, sellers that are TRS have some additional protections as well as they can issue partial refunds if they options 2 or 3 as their return policy.

 

On options 4 & 5 above, they are also known as Free Returns.  If a seller that has either of those policies they will pay the return shipping even on a buyer's remorse return.  A seller can withhold the original shipping value from the refund if the shipping was separately stated in the listing [not free shipping].  Also Seller’s offering options 4 or 5 have the ability to do partial refunds in certain cases if the item arrives back damaged, missing something or in a condition less than what it was sent to the buyer in, see the policy for more details, the link is below.  In the cases where a deduction in the refund is taken due to damage or other authorized reasons for a partial refund, Ebay will protect the seller from negative or neutral feedback.

 

ALL OPTIONS [1, 2, 3, 4 and 5] are required to process SNAD claims without exception.  Even if they are improperly filed and should have been a Buyer’s Remorse claim.

 

All return policies by sellers must meet or exceed what is stated in the Money Back Guarantee Policy!

 

For those with Free Return and/or TRS members with 30 day return policies, there are some added benefits, one of which is the ability to do a discounted refund under certain conditions.

Ebay doesn't support Sellers

I know of 3 online platforms that have no fees no refunds no returns and does $8k a week for me combined. Naming them gets one in trouble though here of course. There are other options. Diversification works in more than just investment portfolios.
