Ebay charged me shipping when buyer paid but I didnt get paid from buyer.

I've been reading posts over and over about this, and I understand the concept but it still just doesnt make sense in my scenario.

I understand that when the buyer pays shipping, they pay me EXTRA for the shipping label, and then I pay that money to ebay and print the label.  Got it.

HOWEVER please tell me how this makes sense.

I sold an item for $75 plus $8 shipping.

I then purchased the shipping label for 8$ leaving me at $57 deposited to me after the selling fees.

If the selling fees come out to roughly 13%, how do I only get $57?  Unless the $8 shipping cost came out of my $75 sale, then $75 minus 13% is $65, MINUS $8 for shipping is the $57 I received.

Shouldnt the buyer have paid me $75 PLUS $8 for a total of $83?  Then I pay the $8 shipping label bringing me back to $75, minus the 13% fee leaving me with $65???  What am I missing??

What you are missing is that the fee comes out of the TOTAL SALE.

The buyer paid $75 + $8 + tax. That is the total sale.

That is the number ebay takes it's fee from.

You're also missing sales tax.  That is included in fees.  This varies according to the state the buyer lives in.   Look on the invoice to see what that amount is.

It's a small thing, but there is also a 30¢ transaction fee.

Item sold for $75.  Shipping was $8.  OP hasn't told us what the state sales tax was, if any.

The final value fee would have been calculated on those three numbers.

If you sold me something for $75 plus $8 shipping the sales tax to me would be $6.23, for a total of $89.23. Your eBay final value fee would be $11.82 plus $0.30.   $89.23 -$12.03  leaves you with $77.20

Fees can vary based on

• item price
• shipping cost
• sales tax
• category
• seller rating
• service metrics
• buyer's registered country
• shipping location
• promoted listings
• store subscription
• listing upgrades

... and about a dozen other things.

Your transaction detail will give you the breakdown of exactly what fees were charged and what type of fees they were. If you have questions about why those fees were charged or how they were calculated, you will need to send us the details. We can't guess at all those variables.

eBay would take their fee first. Then you would have $77.20 minus the label cost. That's  to my location. If you're getting less than $69.20 then maybe the buyer is from a state that charges higher sales tax, and you have a 6% penalty fee for defects. Have you cancelled any transactions or asked eBay to step in a case?

Thank you all for the replies.  Here are all the fees and taxes from the sale.  Also the shipping was 10.55, not 8.  I was thinking of another sale, but it STILL doesnt add up:

Item price: $75

Shipping: $10.55

Total value: 89.68 - 13.25% - .30 cents (12.18)

After fees: 77.5

Minus shipping label: $66.95

Minus sales tax of 4.13: $62.82

So why do I only get 57?

Plus why would sales tax be passed on to the seller?  Doesnt the buyer pay sales tax?  When have you ever gone to a store and the store paid the tax on the items YOU bought?

Are you talking $57 "payout" ?

If yes, talking "payout" , then click on that "payout" in all transactions to see what all was involved in that "payout".

Yes, the buyer pays sale tax, which Ebay then passes on to the state that the item is being delivered to..its the law now.But you are paying a final value fee on the sale, the state tax, and the shipping..plus .30 cents.Looks like you are not adding in the 13.5% you paid Ebay for collecting, and remitting the sale tax. Have you gone to Sellers Hub to see the breakdown of these fees? Selling fees are roughly 13.5% in most categories.

Thank you, Buyselljack, this helped.  They subtracted another $8 for the purchase of a shipping label of ANOTHER item I sold 3 days later. 

Finally found the missing money.  I knew it didnt add up!  It makes sense now, and I should save that cost on my next payout!  Thanks for all the replies.

Adding back that 2nd shipping label cost for that 2nd item, I would have had a payout of $65.

Sometimes the math (money) works out that way.

Fees are instant charges.

Labels are instant charges.

I can get a "payout" with those deductions before the buyer payment finishes "processing",  so although things don't look right with some in the left hand, and some in the right hand, when you put them all on the table in the same pile. it works out 🙂

The buyer should have been invoiced $83 plus any sales taxes in his state.

Let's call that 5% to be easy.

Which would be $86.75.

When he paid that full amount, the sales tax goes to the state and you use the $8 to buy a shipping label.

This was a Flat Rate shipping charge?

You would be charged 13% (should that be12.9%?)  on the Entire Payment.

That's $11.28.

You receive $71.72.

BUT

The only $75 item you sold recently is showing me $17 as the shipping charge.

I am actually in Canada, but I was using 90210 (California) as my address.

When you look at it, Calculated Shipping would show you the shipping cost to YOUR address.

What was the customer location? When you look at the invoice what did it show for shipping?
