I wonder if high priced fine diamond and gemstone jewelry will be next.

Well, now, this is interesting (bold and underline of last sentence are mine). What happened to MBG? Why would any buyer use this program? From ebay's policy page (there's also a lot more about who pays shipping when):
Returns when you doubt authenticity
If you question whether your purchase is authentic, you will need to select the return reason code “doesn’t seem authentic” in the return form. Upon receipt, the item will be re-evaluated by independent experts and you will receive a refund (if applicable) within 5 business days after receiving your returned item.
If the independent expert is unable to verify the authenticity of the item, you will be refunded 100% of the item purchase price, plus any sales tax paid, in full and final settlement. No additional amount will be owed to you.
If the item is verified authentic, then the item will be shipped back to you.

Years back my friend's mom gave me a watch to sell for her. It was sterling with REAL diamond chips on the watch face where the numbers go. It was 100% fake Omega Chronograph. Granted one of these is $1200 they still spent about $400 to make the fake one. The give away was the cheap parts and bad mechanical work inside. So there's counterfeit and there's fake This was real metal and gemstones just a counterfeit Omega.

Buyers will send the item back to who sold it to them to verify its authentic can't get much more ebay than that.....

There's really no eBay "experts" or authenicators - it's just a warehouse with minimum-wage paid employees who basically pack and ship. Would they really know anything about anything??? Of course not, they will simply have eBay instructions to tell all complaining buyers that the item is fake and return it to seller at their expense. And eBay may even charge or punish seller for using their "expertise". Another desperate money-grabbing plot by eBay, business as usual...

But, but, but ... ebay says the returned item will be re-evaluated by independent experts.
As rix said, the only way to authenticate a true luxury watch - the costs-6-digits-one - is to open it up. That could be interesting...

Impossible to be done I buy a real rolex on ebay claim its fake and send a copy back due to questioning being authentic someone independent will have to decide is it real or is it memorex? of course a fellow would be hard pressed to find a real rolex on ebay to begin with...

According to this new backasswards authentication thing, if a buyer says fake and sends it back, but ebay insists it's authentic, well then too bad so sad. Buyer is stuck with it (and pays shipping back and forth about 3 times).
If a buyer buys an non-expertly-authenticated watch, says fake, sends it back, the buyer gets all money and shipping refunded and seller gets 100 lashes.
Only ebay could think of an authentication program that punishes the buyer while trumping its own MBG thing.

ebay sells a watch every 5 second, but sold listing info doesn't back that claim up and 30% of the sold watches are penny watch bags coming from China.... 10 penny sales to make a penny thats some real bidness logic there I wonder if you'd need a degree to understand that bidness logic?

That is why I wish they would do diamond jewelry as I would love to see their credentials and if they are really experts or the progam is a sham.

I don’t know who ebay has doing the authenticating for designer handbags but the eBay authenticate seller has sold fake bags.

They'd probably hire a kid with a pawn shop diamond tester.
There is a lot more to it then just determining whether it is real or a CZ.
And it can mean thousands of dolars depending on it.
