Ebay Is Dead for me . My sales have never been this bad.

So far 2024 has turned out to be one of the worse years since 2000 for me. Sales have been 0 in over a week. I think it's time to move somewhere else.

This actually pinpoints things a bit more as brands make a big difference in this market. Looking at some of the brands the OP has (and which take out the Chinese sellers and big retailers, since even the big resellers won't take these brands for consignment):

43,000+ results for Boohoo

56,000+ results for Alfred Dunner

90,000+ results for NO BOUNDARIES

68,000+ results for Style & Co.

Etc. etc. When selling mid-market labels, style and size start making all the difference. It can be really tough moving these brands as they're so heavily represented.

Prices also make a HUGE difference, and that is where a lot of sellers are falling flat on their faces.

Case in point: I picked up a bunch of stuff at a rummage sale yesterday to list. I was checking comps for one of the things I'd bought, and the Solds showed that this item sells regularly for between $25-35 depending on the condition. There are a whole bunch listed, but the numbers show that they sell well in that particular price range.

And then there were multiple sellers who had theirs priced for $50+. I'm sure they're wondering why THEIRS isn't selling.

Re: Ebay Is Dead for me . My sales have never been this bad.

My sales were down 20% in April for a couple of reasons. I sell to stamp collectors and it’s a cold weather hobby. People are emerging outdoors both for fun and doing yard work.  Second, my attention was elsewhere and I didn’t work my plan.

I saw the OP stating that they were working hard… but were you working smart?

Back in the day I was a young realtor. Like eBay, you needed to make your own thunder to be success.

There was an old salesman in my company who had been a realtor for 30 some years. He has made a living there. He was successful because he worked hard. He’d come in every day and  make prospecting  calls.  Very disciplined!

But the calls he made.. “Hello, this is John from Middletown Realty. Do you want to sell your house?  No? Thank you! He made that call in his slow droning voice over and over, all day long!  Maybe every 100 calls he’d strike gold and get an appointment.  But he kept at it! I doubt he changed a word in 30 years!

On the other side, I  was a young charismatic guy who developed a good pitch and honed and perfected it every call. I could get an appointment every 10 calls because I worked the call.

Hi, this is Tom from Middletown Realty. I was hoping you could help me with a problem. I have customers hoping to buy in your neighborhood, but there aren’t any suitable homes available. Would you know of anyone thinking of selling?

I’d get all kinds of leads, which I’d follow up on. And people didn’t feel attacked, so they’d volunteer that they indeed were getting ready to sell. Score!

As my boss put it.. both John and I would make a living, only I wouldn’t have to work as hard!

In that same vein, are you working hard approaching eBay the same way you did in 1979?  Or are you watching the market, what your competition is doing, and working every angle?  Do you have a clear plan?  X listings a day.. Sell similar x listings a day or weekend?  Hold regular pop up sales?  Broadcast your store on social media?

Just some fuel for the fire!  It’s a different market and it changes daily!

I've just started selling and it's not been a nice experience. 33% non payment thus far. Where are you going to go instead of eBay?

thank you for the detailed advice. I don't do enough scrutinizing unsold listings.

Re: Ebay Is Dead for me . My sales have never been this bad.

Your remark about whether one is still working the same way as decades ago reminded me of a thought I had today which was that years ago I was hot to list any inventory I got. Mostly on Amazon, some on Ebay. Came home and immediately listed the stuff.  Not these days. This is a core issue in my business. I need to think about ways to catch up and stay caught up. Over the past few months I went through piles aggressively and got rid of a lot but there is plenty more.

Everyone else has/is....including buyers.  The only suckers left are those who know how to game this sorry, antiquated site.  It's like getting upset at AOL mail...things just move on.   Saying that, slow sales since 2020 makes sense - consumers are stretched and 2020 they were flush with TOO much case - anything sold, with no issues.  Today's mistake is reduced demand and reduced support by ebay.  Current buyers are crazy and ebay fosters that.  FAR TOO MUCH RISK, at any price or volume.  I'm just out.

It's not eBay. As a small scale seller I've learned, when the economy is not as good as claimed by the media, I have to adjust and work harder. Improve my presentation, lower my prices and dump the junk. That's all.
