I sort of remember eBay having an escrow or mediator service years ago. Maybe something like that would be good to have now for expensive items and fraud laden categories. A small fee upfront to cover costs and eliminate some of the recent problems with returns. Might be good for sellers and buyers.

Yes. Yes we are.
I remember EBay escrow, too.... it came out right after the dinosaurs went extinct.

Too expensive. And still open to fraud. You will need experts to examine items before shipment. Ebay has something like that for luxury goods like high end handbags, but once eBay accepts to sell your item for you, they are on the hook for any returns. Once you get your money it is yours for good.
Maybe that would be a better approach but I doubt eBay would want to get into the selling business. For tech companies, the objective is for sites that run themselves.

Maybe something like that could help with electronics and phones. No easy answers for this stuff anymore.

The escrow service that was offered way back then was that the money went to the escrow company, and the item was shipped from the seller to the buyer. Once the buyer said everything was OK, the money would be released to the seller.

The easy answer is local cash sales 🙂
