OVER 10% TAX ON ALL PURCHASES MADE ON EBAY?
THAT'S OUTRIGHT CRIMINAL.
I WILL CERTAINLY THINK TWICE BEFORE ORDERING THROUGH EBAY.
PERHAPS AMAZONIAN LOBBYISTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE POLITICIANS DOING THIS.

I think that you will find that the state of South Dakota is the place that you should be point fingers at.
Lots of info about it on the interweb.
AS you continue to make internet purchases you are likely to find that it is not just "eBay" that is collecting/remitting these required taxes.

I know this can be difficult to understand but breach of law actually occurs during tax evasion.
Sales tax is not "criminal," it is criminal not to pay it and many folks chose to do just that so now it is being enforced, enforcing a law is not criminal, evading it is.

Oh, yeah. Probably Amazonian lobbyists--except you'll pay the same tax on Amazon purchases, so their nefarious plan failed.
Good luck finding an online retailer that doesn't charge sales tax for residents of your state.

Talk to your state legislature. They are the ones who imposed the tax, not eBay.
THAT'S OUTRIGHT CRIMINAL.
Not it isn't. In fact, just the opposite - not collecting it is now criminal.
I WILL CERTAINLY THINK TWICE BEFORE ORDERING THROUGH EBAY.
That is certainly your prerogative.

Sales tax rules apply to Amazon as well.

Actually, I suspect that smaller independent web sites do not collect the tax. On my own independent site I only collect tax for Nevada where I am located. The amount that I sell on that web site to each state does not meet the thresholds for charging taxes in any of the other states. So other state buyers do not pay tax, and I am not breaking any laws as I am under the threshold.

Okay, so:
"Good luck finding an major online retailer that doesn't charge sales tax for residents of your state. You know--ones about the size of eBay or Amazon, which are what we were talking about."

Actually what the OP said was:
I WILL CERTAINLY THINK TWICE BEFORE ORDERING THROUGH EBAY.
and what you said was:
Good luck finding an online retailer that doesn't charge sales tax for residents of your state.
That you later modified your response does not change the validity of my response to the original comments.
Why do you HAVE to buy from a major online seller? Isn't that the big complaint about the chain stores as to how they drove the independent sellers out of business.? I prefer to deal with smaller companies whenever I can. More often than not if you have a question the person who responds is the owner, not some low level desk jockey.

Why do you HAVE to buy from a major online seller?
Because usually they are the ones with the goods people want and also generally have the best prices.
I like to support small independent retailers but I'm not willing to overpay for the privilege (if the small indie even has what I want).

Ive certainly had more problems buying from small online companies than Ive ever had with Ebay or the river..

As a larger seller, we sell to pretty much every sate and collect tax in almost every state, even ones where eBay doesn't collect it automatically. Recent lawsuits by states against ecommerce sites have gone in favor of the states and sales tax to buyers in those states is now the law. You can expect more states to join in as well. There are exceptions for small sellers, and not all states even have sales tax. Then there are states where sales tax is product specific (PA does not tax clothing or food) and other states have differing tax rates for different products. It's a difficult landscape to navigate. Pretty soon all sellers (except small independant sellers) will have to collect and remit tax to states, and buyers who used to buy online to avoid tax will no longer have that loophole.
Right now it's painful for eBay buyers, and we get a lot of complaints of how we raised the price or charged them more than the listed price when it's the sales tax we are legally required to collect and remit. But se sellers need to educate our buyers that this is now the law. Since this tax collection started last year, the number of complaints I've seen from buyers has diminished.

@enduringfun
Your State was the one that decided to start collecting sales tax on line and not Ebay.
Ebay just has to follow the law and collect it and send it to the State.

Lot of people who keep defending the taxes fail to understand something simple; most buyers online have no problem paying the taxes at online sites like Amazon and Walmart. They expect it and have been paying it for a while now.
This eBay tax came out of nowhere. Ebay botched this tax roll out. They could have warned both sellers and buyers it was coming. Instead we all found out when it happened. I was having a good last few months until the tax showed up. The last buyer I sold something to tried to get me to remove it. He ended up paying for it but that was the last sale I have had in the past 7 days.
There is zero doubt in my mind that many buyers are refusing to pay this tax. I am not saying it should not be collected, I just think eBay could have done a better job rolling it out and explaining it on the forms. Apparently on some forms the tax is clearly stated. On the older forms it is not.
I would not discount the anger of the OP because I feel many others feel the same way.

Dont people read the newspaper, or listen to the news? Guess I dont understand all this shock and anger at online taxes.
