I'm reading through these boards and all I see is chaos. People getting scammed and filing police reports or wanting to hire attorneys. Tax crisis. Veterans who have been selling here for years having tens of thousands of dollars being held by ebay. Sellers being banned and punished for no reason that they control, without anyway to appeal.
Politicians don't cause as much unhappiness as does ebay. I'm still looking for the thread about how great ebay is and all it's done.

Since 1995 eBay has consistently been the largest pure Marketplace site outside of China, only Alibaba is in the same league.
The other big online players (Amazon, Walmart) are not pure marketplaces as they sell their own goods and for Amazon it's still almost 50% of the total (Walmart much higher).
From their respective marketplaces, Ebay makes about 10 billion in sales, Amazon over 200 billion.
Cut it in half, still not bigger.
I get where you are coming from but I want them to step up seller support it's getting dismal here.

You are woefully misinformed!
eBay GMV for 2020 (full year 2021 will be released on the 23rd) was $100 Billion, 100% of that is third-party Sellers.
Amazon did have a GMV exceeding $200 Billion, by quite a bit actually but the amount sold by Third-Party sellers on the Amazon site is in the same range as eBay. It's difficult to get an exact number out of Amazon because they combine the revenues of many different parts with no breakdown between say Whole Foods and what is sold on the site, or how much is Prime subscriptions or Alexa devices.
The only thing we really know about Amazon is the AWS is the only thing keeping them in the black, something that took them almost 20 years to achieve.

GMV is top line. Amazon GMV for 2020 was 500 billion.
I was talking about bottom line, which is the important number here.
I don't want to argue but you guys...come on

MY POINT WAS THAT THEY ARE A GLOBAL LEADER IN CREATING CHAOS. NOTHING TO DO WITH $.

Amazon has NEVER shown a cent of "bottom line" from their online retail operations. They have been losing Billions which is why for the past few years they have done everything they can to extract as much money as possible from third-party sellers.
Their dodgy accounting boosted their 2021 Q4 results but the big driver of that (Rivian) went the other direction in January and Q1 2022 may not look very good.

I was gonna say, hasn't it been pretty clearly established that their online retail sales are not in fact profitable at all and that all of the profit is coming from the tech side of the company, like AWS?

"Full year 2020 — The company expects net revenue between $9.56 billion and $9.76 billion, representing Organic FX-Neutral growth of 1% - 3%, with GAAP earnings per diluted share from continuing operations in the range of $2.20 - $2.30 and non-GAAP earnings per diluted share from continuing operations in the range of ..."
Do you want to talk top or bottom line?

One plane crashes and it makes the headlines. 1,000,000 planes land safely and you never hear about it. Chaos sells - you never hear a word from those that landed safely.
People getting scammed and filing police reports or wanting to hire attorneys.
People get scammed because they don’t know what they are doing and fall greedy eyed for the green monster
I’m a retired veteran - send me a gift card
I need you to send it to a different address
Contact me outside of eBay so I can make payment arrangements.
etc etc etc
In other words they never learned the rules of the game.
“Oh boy, this looks easy - I’ll just in with both feet” said Tom lamely. (Google “Swifties”)
Tax crisis.
There is no tax crisis. It is more of the above uninformed individuals thoroughly misunderstanding the rules and reasons for the 1099K form. And not having an understanding of the difference between “gross income” and “net (taxable) income”
Veterans who have been selling here for years having tens of thousands of dollars being held by ebay.
Income is being held because stubborn uniformed sellers are refusing to comply with the IRS rules. You don’t tug on Superman’s cape.
Sellers being banned and punished for no reason that they control, without anyway to appeal.
The sellers who are being banned are told by eBay why they are being banned. Then they come on here and lament “but I didn’t do anything wrong”. They always conveniently neglect to tell us what the message said. The old classic “Not Me”.
Improperly using a brand name
Relisting, sometimes repeatedly, what eBay has told them not to list
Misstating the description of an item
Deliberately putting something in the wrong category in an effort to get a better undeserved FVF
etc etc etc
Politicians don't cause as much unhappiness as does ebay.
I started in ’04 with about $240.00 in inventory. Now it is well into 7 figures.
In the words of Jackie Gleason - How sweet it is.
I'm still looking for the thread about how great ebay is and all it's done.
Does that satisfy your request?

Thank you ^^^^^ This is spot on.
Has no one noticed how quickly people complain and how few people praise?
it seems to be the human condition..........

"People get scammed because they don’t know what they are doing"
I mean, that's just not a good natured comment at all. Someone gloating who doesn't have to deal with 'item broke, not working u send money'...?
Guess it only happens with higher value items. I've been mostly lucky, but I realize that. Others, even when they knew what they were doing, got scammed.
I think we should be more principled and say what is what.

I'm not trying to be good natured. Sometimes a steely eyed cold slap in the face is what people need.
In response to your example:
"I'm sorry - feel free to return it for a full refund - I'll even pay the return shipping". And you do not yield from that position.
Sometimes, suddenly and miraculous you never hear from them again.

I was not replying to your comment, I I was replying to richard1rst who was replying to the OP whose ACTUAL question here was far from just about scams, but asking why there seems to be so many negative and unhappy posts here.
Please feel free to just pretend I am not even here from now on............

I already got the solution here so why are you lecturing me? Please try to be more magnanimous.
