Double check your shipping costs

Please double check your shipping costs. According to USPS a pound item is now $8.40 with the new rates.  Double check UPS and Fedex they may have cheaper rates. It is getting very expensive to ship, plus the fees. Just be aware and check so you are not losing out.

Blessings on your day.

USPS rates are based not only on the weight of the package but the size, zone they are shipping to and the class of postage used to ship the item. I have always used calculated shipping and eBay has been pretty good about incorporating the shipping cost changes into the cost the buyer sees to ship the item. For those using free shipping or flat rate shipping the adjustment may present a few more challenges.

I don't use eBay to purchase my shipping labels but utilize Pirate Ship which has also been excellent about incorporating the shipping cost changes when I purchase the actual shipping label. While Pirate Ship handles USPS and UPS labels you cannot get FedEx labels through Pirate Ship. One caution on using UPS and FedEx is they are infamous for unilateral surcharges after package delivery.

The current online rate of 1lb (@USPS Ground Advantage) across the country is $6.66 if bought online. Did you pay full retail (counter price)?

There are also some new rural delivery rates, that is new and we are starting to parse out, but $8.40 seems a bit high... anyone?

No, I do calculated shipping as well. I was remarking at what the postal service is now charging. If was standard for us that $6.00 used to mail most of our items. Looking at the new postal scale a pair of jeans or a sweater is $8.40.  I was just reminding everyone to double check with this new increase. That is all.

I was trying to be helpful in these days of reselling.

There is the new holiday rate increase, but that should not be $8.40. It's not over-dim size if it's just a sweater. And the new rural rates shouldn't be that much extra (*edit* if implies).

I'm not arguing or correcting you, I'm a seller as well and would like to know why for myself too.

I've had more sales than usual lately and everything seems fine except for the small holiday rate bump...

The problem with FedEx and UPS is that the price the eBay tool is showing you is not correct. Because if your density (weight/volume) is too low. In this case you are getting a hefty bill 1 or 2 weeks after shipping, and then you suddenly realize the USPS — beside the convenience of coming and picking up your stuff — is not so bad after all !

Help is always appreciated as shipping can be one of the most difficult things to figure out with regards to cost and saving both your buyer and you money especially if you are on the east or west coast. I am in Virginia and an 8" x 10" envelope weighing 1 pound, 4 ounces cost me $5.86 to ship to the east coast using USPS Ground Advantage Cubic but the same package to the west coast is $9.17. Ironically the rates remain the same for the same size packages up to 20 pounds.

Beyond 21 pounds it is better to use a USPS Priority Mail Padded flat rate envelope which cost $8.95 regardless of where you send the item. That rate is good up to a 70 pound package. I have shipped some pretty hefty packages using USPS flat rate envelopes.

I will on occasion find UPS to be cheaper but I never purchase my labels through eBay due to the potential unilateral surcharges. I don't have that concern with Pirate Ship. I never utilize FedEx since Pirate Ship does not offer it.

I also pay for my labels with a cash back credit card which returns a little bit of change on a yearly basis.
