So if I print the shipping label at 10pm on a sunday night doesn't mean that the item got shipped so why does ebay state that it got shipped?
Maybe that's where I'm getting flogged by the gods for late shipping?

Why the need to be condescending.
You mnight be mistaking exasperation and irritation for condescension.
I am simply telling you how I avoid a late shipment but also saying that I realize that it may work for me because I am low volume.
I realize you mean well, but you are using terms like 'late shipment' that don't correspond to what eBay wants sellers to do.
eBay's does not consider a package whose label was paid for and printed even 3 days before actually being mailed to be late. Lateness is established by the listing's published handling time, class of service and seller's previous record for speed of delivery.
The eBay label printing feature automatically sets the date to the next business day if the label is requested after USPS post office hours, and in addition there is a 3 day window that the seller can use to select the date of actual shipping, if the package will not be shipped on the default business day. That date appears on the label and on the label receipt both the PRINT DATE and the SHIP DATE appear.
None of this has anything whatsoever to do with a shipment being late in eBay's eyes.

I printed a label last Saturday before MLK day and the label said the item would be shipped that day! A Saturday after the post office was closed.
From now on I will be paying very close attention to ebay's latest glitch--stating that the package is going out the same day as the label is printed.
