Does Anyone Use a Website to Sell?

Is it beneficial to have a website along with an eBay store? Currently I have a link to my eBay store in my social media profile, but have seen others who also sell through a website. Seems like a lot of redundancy and work, but was wondering what others experiences were.

Thanks!

Lisa

$7/month?!? Your server host would cost you more than that. Your licensing of all your software would also cost you more than that. Not a chance. If that were true nobody would be selling here. So your internet, electricity, hardware, etc. is free?

If you know how to code API calls then you can use eBay https://developer.ebay.com/develop/apis

then you can make sure the sale on the website ends the eBay listing.

I don't but what if the sale happened on Ebay.  What happens to the inventory on the other site or sites a seller has the same thing listed on?  It is a dangerous practice and at some point it will bite the seller.

If you are sleeping and an item sells on your website at 2AM, then you have the same item selling on Ebay and it sells at 4AM.

One site we still crosspost on automatically lists our new eBay products and deletes them when they are sold on eBay.  Unfortunately it doesn't work the other way.

And I don't know of any program that will do that for your personal website.

I found that a bit confusing since you did not designate what was my post and what was yours.  So the green above is what I said, the rest is yours.

Look if you want to cross post, you are welcome to it.  It is your decision to make.  It is dangerous IMHO.

I only pay $15 a month to host my web sites and I build them for free.

Have a great day.

The question I always ask is "How will buyers find your website in order to buy your stuff?"  If you are confident that you can generate your own traffic to the items you have for sale, it may be a good idea.

I had an ecommerce website for about 10 years.   I eventually closed it to sell on eBay.

Long story short:  A static website with a bunch of items for sale is going to be largely ignored by Google.

The ONLY way you are going to be noticed by Google (and possibly the other large search engines) is if you post fresh content daily to your site.  And sometimes multiple times a day.

You can submit your website's sitemap to Google for indexing.  Google will come back after a few days to see if there is anything new there.   If there is, then Google will have reason to return.

But if Google sees that the same items are listed day in and day out and there is no substantive changes (new content) being made on the site, then Google will index you maybe a second time, and not bother returning.

The book or the shirt you are selling will be included in a prospective buyer's search results, but your ranking will be extremely low, and it will be very difficult for buyers to find you.

Incidentally, Google will not be fooled by rotating images or text boxes that you can program to appears on different pages throughout the site.

The exception to the above is if you are selling unique items that cannot be found elsewhere on the internet.  Even then, you will still be a drop of water in a vast sea.

eBay seller since 1999. This is a posting ID.

I am paying a flat fee of $145 for four years of hosting + email at Hostinger, and $15 a year for domain registration at IONOS. That works out to under $4.50 per month.

Your licensing of all your software would also cost you more than that.

There are plenty of free options out there.

So your internet, electricity, hardware, etc. is free?

ROTFL. No one suggested those are free. But they are not free when you use them to sell on eBay, either. 🙄

Having a low-cost cloud-based website does not mean you will be able to get traffic to your site. I certainly can't, which is why I sell on eBay and not on my websites.
