Do top-level store categories automatically show all content of their subcategories?

Haven't found an answer to this one by any type of Internet search.  When you populate your store subcategories with listings, do the listings also appear by default in the subcategory's top-level category, or will I need to use the second Store Category feature of the listing for that?

You cannot add listings to any category that has subcategories.

If you have something like:

Mens Tops

   >Tshirts

   >Sweaters

   >Sweatshirts

You cannot add items to Mens Tops. You can add items to any of the 3 subcategories. If a buyer selects Mens Tops from your category menu, they will see items for 3 all subcategories.
