Did tha rules change for auctions with a buy it now?

I had an item up for 7 day auction for 39.95 with a buy it now for 52.95. I had 2 bids for 40 and then one for 42 on day 4.  Then someone different bought it for the buy now price of 52.95 on day 5, with more than a day remaining. I thought ONCE YOU HAD A BID, the buy it now option went away??. Has this changed? Or how did this happen?

There are a few categories that work differently.

Yes, the BIN option should have disappeared when the first bid was placed.  There are 4 categories where the BIN remains available until the bidding reaches 50% of the BIN price, but that shouldn't matter in this example because the opening bid was more than 50% so the first bid would have met that 50% criterion.

When someone bids, the Buy It Now option usually disappears; however, in the case of reserve price listings, the Buy It Now option remains until the reserve price is met. In some categories, the Buy It Now option may continue to be available after the first bid for a limited time.

The item was listed on eBay Motors, not eBay. Perhaps the rules there are different.

Maybe, but the only policy difference that I'm aware of is that auctions for vehicles aren't binding. These pages on Motors policies don't mention any action/BIN situations:
