Deceiving Listings, Does the Seller Know?

Anonymous
Not applicable

Been shopping on Ebay for some Bedding Sheet sets and Have ran across so much **bleep**, Like 5.99 free shipping then click on link and its just for pillow shams. Sheets are way more. I am having to filter so much to the point I cant find what I am looking for.

 I found one today( see Pictures)  This is just like Walmart. Price always changing Never as it seems!

My Question is Does the Seller know this is showing up Free shipping, Before they click on it? If so sure isnt helping them sale it!

It's not a glitch, I've seen this before.  They've figured out some way to game the system.

@Anonymous how do they manage to get free shipping in the search and then charge in the ad?

Are you searching on a phone?

When I look at the listing on my iPad with a US zip code I don’t see free shipping.   The seller does have free local pick up but you shouldn’t be seeing that in search.   I know other buyers have mentioned seeing a similar glitch.  I doubt that the seller knows it is showing like that and I’m certain they are not trying to game the system assuming  someone else suggested.

@Anonymous  This has been reported on the boards before when free local pickup will show as free shipping to some users. Any idea why?

glitch22222222.JPGWhen I was searching on My Desk top computer for sheet sets, I was looking at an item and it poped up at the bottom, When it shows Explorer more Options. It says Free shipping right on it, But then you click on it and it has shipping price .

The problem that I'm faced with is how someone can create a listing with FS on the search page, but an actual shipping charge within the listing. Using TL, you can't do both, and revising a listing doesn't have that extra field either.

@Anonymous

I'm getting a shipping fee showing up in both search and the listing, and my fee is less than yours by 3.00.

Hi @pjcdn2005 and @Anonymous, I'm not seeing free shipping in search results on the listing used in the OP's post. Since I can't replicate the issue it can make it more difficult to diagnose the cause of a problem. With that said, free shipping shouldn't be advertised on items that do not offer free shipping, even if they have free local pickup. I'll send this example to our developers so that they can take a closer look into it.

Try changing your zipcode to theirs.  It's some sort of "limited area free shipping" thing.  When I found one of these and contacted the seller I was told "we only offer free shipping to certain locations" which doesn't make sense at all.

If the first search brought up a 'product page', that's where the problem is. Not to mention that the listing showing on that product page may not even match the listing it brings you into if you click on it.

Hello Brian,

Just a thought - do you use a browser for which the site is specifically optimized?  Do you folks use different browsers and/or devices for the investigating the possible glitches and such?

Just curious as I can use Firefox 28 (it is up to 52 or 54 or something like that, I think) or an old Chrome and I see things that you folks say you can't find.

Just wondering how you try to replicate the search.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

The foolishness of one's actions or words is determined by the number of witnesses.

Perhaps if Brains were described as an APP, many people would use them more often.

@Anonymous

I use a desktop and I've come across listings like that.

It'll show free shipping on the search results, but when you click the listing, there will be a shipping charge.

Have a great day.

Search works fine even in FireFox 3.6.24, 11, and 31.

And Firefox is up to v59 now.

I know exactly what you are talking about! They’ve found a loophole somewhere. What I noticed is that if you open the shipping and payments tab, they offer 2 shipping options- free USPS priority shipping shipping and calculated priority shipping BUT there is NO way to choose free shipping. It defaults to charged shipping during checkout.
