DEFECT RATE

A defect rate is a percentage. So the only two ways to improve that percentage are (1) don't get any more defects, and wait for the older ones to age out; and (2) have plenty of sales so the defects are part of a larger number of transactions.

From eBay's Help page about seller performance standards:

"One of the key seller performance measures is your transaction defect rate. A defect is added to your account if:

  • You cancel a buyer's purchase because you no longer have the item in stock or you chose not to send it.
  • An item-not-received or not-as-described request from a buyer is closed without seller resolution."

We need more information before we can help. What kinda of defects are you getting? Are you cancelling sales because you are out of stock? Not uploading tracking information on time? Getting too many SNAD returns?

You earn  defect when you cancel a transaction because it is out of stock, broken or no longer available.

You earn a defect when a return case is unresolved by the seller.

It becomes unresoloved if either party asks eBay for help. If the seller asks eBay to decide the seller gets a defect. If the buyer asks eBay to step in the case the seller gets a defect.

To avoid a defect accept returns and provide a return label if the buyer claims it isn't as described.

Ship using tracking and make sure the tracking number uploaded within your handling time.

Your defect rate is the percentage of transactions that have a defect over the evaluation period.

But remember, that evaluation period changes every day. For every day that passes, a new day's transactions are added to the "front" of the evaluation period, and the oldest day's transactions drop off the "back" of the evaluation period.

So the only way to "fix" your defect rate is add new transactions to the front of the evaluation period faster than transactions are dropping off the back of the evaluation period.

@dhlawnandgarden

In addition to @luckythewinner 's post here is a link to Seller Performance in the Help Pages.  Even if you have to sell some things at a lower cost to increase your transactions (per Lucky) it may help avoid dropping your Seller status ... if you drop low enough eBay will charge you additional FVFs and possibly limit the number of items you can list per month until your Status improves.

And there you have it.  Don't sell something you don't have in hand.

DEFECT RATE

OMG i am going through same thing, I sat there and typed out a whole paragraph, ON CHAT, and the guy said ok we will update you in 24 hours and we will try to get the FB removed. There was NOTHING whatsoever about FB in my comments, I was talking about defects. ALL OF US SELLERS know how incompetent the postal system has been lately, so why are we getting punished for that? I have 2 late shipments that I never even heard anything about and I had no clue I even had defects until someone explained to me about them. I know that I am not getting 250 free listings either like i am supposed to either. I have noticed no one really cares about your issues really, they seem to be just trying to pacify and get me off the chat. I appealed 2 of the late shipments and was denied having them removed. Today I had Ebay to charge me "extra shipping" as well. It was more than 1.00 added to like 3 or 4 of my recent last sales. No one could explain that to me either. They charged it to my account and the labels had already been printed off and items sent out. So why was I charged extra shipping on them, they were not applied to the items because the items were mailed out day or two ago already. Also I have 6 sales I had to cancel due to heavy rains and tornado weather in my area recently. My shed window got blown out and a tub of my items got ruined. There was no way I could go through with the sales, I contacted each and every one of my bidders, they were nothing but thankful so I know no one complained about it. So why am I still, months later being punished by things that were 100% out of my control? Someone please talk to me . I am a new seller and already i am so discouraged by the way I am getting treated. There has got to be some way to get my issues taken care of but how? I have chatted on these things multiple times, only to hear the same over and over, wait 24 to 48 hours and we............. that is all i get. Nothing is being done. It is not our fault, as sellers that the postal system is being the way they are. What about it sellers????
