I'm looking to cut my Ebay fees. I've been using a second category, believing that this increases the visibility of my items. But is this true? Will I see a drop in sales if I drop the second catagory? It doubles the listing fee but does it also increase the final value fee also?
Thanks,

It may increase visibility, but I think the primary impact is that it increases eBay's profits.
Your sales are going to increase by (a) having products people want, (b) having competitive prices, (c) having friendly sales terms like 30-day returns and fast shipping, (d) having great photographs, and (e) having a good seller account reputation.
Listing in multiple categories? I don't even think of that as being one of the top 10 keys to success on eBay.

I also thought listing in two categories would increase visibility and sales but gave it up when the fees became too much. It did not impact my sales at all. I only use it now if there are two very different categories where buyers searching for different reasons will hopefully see it.
I think the key to getting your listing noticed is to cram as much detail as you can into the title and fill out as many item details as you can so it will pop up when a buyer enters a very specific search.
And while I know there's not a lot of enthusiasm for it, I have increased my sales significantly using promoted listings. Yes, it is another fee but at least you don't pay it unless the item sells via the promoted version of the listing.

I agree that listing in 2 categories is a waste of money.
Most buyers search using keywords, so it doesn't matter what category the item is listed in.
Filling in all 80 characters of the title, as well as Item Specifics, and a detailed description is what will help buyers find your item.

I agree that 2 categories is a waste of money, I also agree with Disney many buyers search by title/ key words not category.
You could always give it a shot and stop using the 2nd category & see if it results in a decline in sales.
Use the title and use item specifics.

Been here for eons, probably used it once or twice in rare circumstances. I agree, people do not shop CATEGORIES, in fact a single category is even hard to locate in eBay anymore, use to have a nice Category List, now it is so long and confusing, would be almost impossible to use for searching. Save yourself the money and just use the closest category you can find to your item and a good title, you will be fine!

One of my favorite advantages of a store is that you can list in 2 categories at no extra cost. So all of my listings are listed in one category on eBay and in two categories in my eBay store.

99% of the time it's a waste... Most people search via keywords... The trick there is to do several searches yourself with various words that might be used to search for your item and look along the left sidebar to see if eBay decides to auto-choose a subcategory to only show results from (instead of " All ")... That would be the category you would want to list your item, otherwise it will probably never be seen (unless a person manually chooses All when searching).
