Credit Card Chargeback after "Authenticity Guarantee"? (specifically, an unscrupulous buyer)

I currently have a few New With Tags and receipt Chanel Bags. These will be sold for $4k+. I love the authenticity guarantee, however is there anything to protect the seller from a CC Chargeback? I did ask ebay for business this exact question, and here is there answer:

Thanks for sharing your concerns. We're confident you will have a smooth transaction with eBay's Authenticity Guarantee. A payment dispute can happen with any item in any business and it really is determined by the credit card company. Should a dispute be opened on an item that goes through our Authenticity Guarantee, we'd ask you to contest the dispute. If you ended up losing, we would look into options to help appeal. While we work hard to keep these transactions safe, we can never guarantee you would win a payment dispute or appeal.

How do you contest a dispute on a chargeback? If I lose, what options will ebay offer to help appeal? I feel totally unprotected. Am I paranoid? What are the chances ebay will reimburse? thanks

All I can say is it takes a lot of courage to list things with those prices. Your ebay score is 807, and it is said dont set any prices above that, I know it sounds illogical, but that is I believe what loss they are willing to actually back you. No one wants to say or promise this, however. My advise is to wait for more advise. Because I would list it, I'm a seller, and I'll list anything I think that has some chance of selling. Good luck!

First, the short answer is that there is no protection against chargebacks.  And yes, you will be totally unprotected.  And this leads to the second caution, you do not have listed, nor have sold anything, to justify taking the risk of listing a $4K item.  If you were to lose your $4K purse then you would loose all your profits from at least one month of sales.  As I always advise people, run your sales through a statistical calculator (free online) and avoid selling any item more than two standard deviations away from your average sale.  You would be much better off to sell your purse locally for 20% below what you would expect to sell kit on Ebay, which is close to what you would net after fees.  Given the risk involved I might even sell for closer to 25-30 % off, and you will sleep better as well.

Credit card chargeback scammers for a 4k item is a possibility on here. Ebay cannot quarentee that you would win a chargeback as this is controlled by the banks that issue the cards. They have been known for unfairly dealing with merchants and siding with their customers. I would not chance a 4k item unless you were able to sell at least 10 of these a month with no problems and be able to handle a 4k loss from time to time.

Playing a significant role is the reason code associated with the chargeback @cusouno. Nobody will be able to give you a good answer about the chances of winning a payment dispute as a general question because there are too many factors that can result in drastically different outcomes.

The bottom line is that it's a risk and you shouldn't sell it online if you can't afford that risk.

There are not too many ways to prevail with a chargeback.

Sometimes e-Bay will work to make a Seller whole, however, that is not a "frequent" situation based on personal experience.

Items at that level ($4k) is a true risk on this site and others.  Is there a local consignment shop option?  I would explore that in tandem with options to sell online.

Good luck!

No, you are not paranoid because listing any item is a risk here. There is virtually no chance eBay is going to reimburse you for a credit card chargeback.

...from what I have been reading in this forum and, IMHO, 90% of appealing against transaction disputes is going "South" - or lost - never win - on top of that an extra $20 fee from eBay was charged to sellers for losing that battlefield...

...an addition to selling high-end value items is buyers can file INAD case and return a box of trash to sellers instead...

...sell those Chanel costly products through a local selling sites and pick-up in person with cash or cashier check...it could be less in profits but it would save a ton of headache and loss sleep

One other option is to sell them at an auction house. These type items are highly collectible now and many have special sales or sections of sales around them. Depending on the auction house and how many you have, fees can be in the 20-30% range.

Wouldn't have to be local either. Many would allow you to ship directly to them.

First and foremost there is no way I would ever list a 4K item on eBay. May as well put a bullseye on your forehead and walk out onto a shooting range. However if you are going to proceed you should be aware that eBay does have seller protection against chargebacks but it has some unique caveats to it. I would suggest you read through it and familiarize yourself with the specifics.

Credit Card Chargeback after "Authenticity Guarantee"? (specifically, an unscrupulous buyer)

I have just received a chargeback on an item I sold that was authenticated by eBay. I now have a $2000+ hold on my eBay account until their financial institution decides whether the money will be returned to them or not. Of course the financial institution will side with the buyer and not require them to return the item. I was told by eBay customer support that when this happens, eBay will reimburse me the amount that they withdraw from my account. If this happens then I will be a tremendous fan of the Authenticity program. I'm also prepping for the likelihood that eBay turns my money over to the scammer.

Were you told this via ''chat'' so you have a transcript of the information given to you ?

If not, I would not hang my hopes on what you were ''told'' by a CSR on the phone, sorry......

There aren't any guarantees.  Today, there was another seller reporting that they sold a luxury watch for $2200.00 two months ago that was authenticated by eBay.  Her buyer has filed a CC chargeback for not as described.  The seller was advised that should the buyer's claim prevail that the seller is still responsible for reimbursing the buyer for "legal reasons" and will have to file an appeal to get their money back.
