Counterfeit Listings Out of Control

I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death, but nonetheless  here I am. Why is it that sellers are allowed to sell counterfeit products with virtually no recourse for buyers? You take any item that is popular, search for it on Ebay and you will get more counterfeit Listings than authentic ones. This is true with lithium batteries, vaping coils, solder flux, toys, you name it. The reporting system is abysmal and even if it was robust, the fact that sellers can create 100's of accounts and peddle the same wares from each one ensures that their counterfeit product will continue to ship even if they are forced to remove a listing from one of their accounts. The sad part is, most people won't even realize their item is counterfeit and will never buy that brand again, which hurts the company that actually makes a quality product. EBay could force sellers to become verified and limit each person to only ONE LEGITIMATE ACCOUNT so everyone would be privy to all the feedback the seller has received instead of switching accounts whenever their name gets tarnished. I guess it's not in Ebays' interest to limit the number of accounts a seller has because they collect a fee regardless if the item is real or not. The ones that get hurt are the buyer and the company whose product is being counterfeited, or "cloned" as one seller put it, as if the word "clone" makes it any better.

If I were to open an e-commerce store advertising genuine products and sending counterfeit ones instead, I would be charged with mail/wire fraud. Why isn't this happening to any sellers on Ebay and why does Ebay not put REAL MEASURES in place to prevent this type of fraud?

My thoughts? As if I have control over what a shoddy vendor resells. As a buyer, I have to return the fake item to the vendor to get refunded or else I am stuck with the unwanted item. After that, my obligation is over. It's not my job to police what the vendor resells, and even if it was, how could I? It all goes back to Ebay allowing multiple accounts for sellers. If they had to provide identification to make an account and were then restricted to only one account, they would make more effort to post accurate Listings for fear of getting negative feedback. As long as sellers can create multiple accounts, no amount of reporting and refunding is going to stop this practice.

Buying from CHINA,, is akin to what EBAY was 15-20 years ago,, buyer beware..

I respectfully disagree, based on my experience and talking to/knowing a few other buyers.  I think the influx of Chinese ***bleep*** is and will continue to be more of a problem than ripoffs that occurred here 15-20 years ago.

It's not a problem that is unique to ebay; many other places are fighting imported counterfeit items.

We used to  do a lot of business with Chinese companies, at least 15 years ago, importing chair mechanisms and other such manufacturing items.  The company owners/plant managers would always give us gifts (we were not subject to the emoluments clause, lol) and the gifts would sometimes come out the back door, unbeknownst to us.  One time my husband received a full set, complete with TaylorMade golf bag, of the then current hottest and most expensive TaylorMade clubs and he gave them to a friend.  After 2 swings, the head of the driver flew off; the whole set was fake.

I've got a box upstairs that says "China - gifts" that eventually I will get around to having someone look at.  Some exquisite pottery from an artist, things marked 24k, etc.  Who knows if I'm sitting on junk or treasure, lol.  I do have a fabulous carved wooden screen that is the real deal but selling here and then shipping - nope.

This is not a new problem; it's just that ecommerce has exploded and thus the opportunities for more counterfeit items on the market.

Someone said below thread that having the seller pay return postage is one answer.  Nope, not items bought from China.  Ebay can't force non-domestic sellers to issue return mailing labels.

You can find 324,000 listings to report by searching 925 sterling silver in Fashion jewelry.

What you think eBay just doesn't know? Did no one report it? It's directly violating their own policy.

have been selling on eBay since I was s kid today I am close to 70 years old

Interesting,,,,,,selling since you were a kid????   How can that be?  You have to be 18 to have an account.   eBay was founded in 1995 not 1965.

The marketplace isn't necessarily safer if you  limit sellers to just one account.   You seem to think the only reason a seller has another account is to hide their feedback.   I disagree with that.   Aside from that If the seller is selling fakes then it will be found out soon enough no matter whose user name it's listed under.  When eBay suspends you from selling they suspend all accounts linked to you.  They'll suspend your mother from another state if she visited you and signed in eBay on your computer.  You won't be able to sell on any of your existing accounts and you can't make new accounts

International sellers can't issue return labels through ebay however if the seller does not provide funds for the buyer to purchase their own return label, ebay can require the seller to refund without a return.

It's not hard to hide the association of multiple accounts. People can use different computers, VPN's and different PayPal accounts. But you're entitled to your opinion. My point is that it is so hard to prove an item is not legitimate because I've learned you must get the company that was infringed upon to certify that the item is fake. Good luck with that. In the meantime, those same items are being sold by multiple other sellers and all shipping from the same tiny town in California. I'm sure that's just a coincidence though. 😂

Sellers reporting other sellers?....Maybe they would  a bit  but  that could be diciplined but mostly its ebay knowingly PROFITEERING in the tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars annually on illegal counterfeit items...ebay: a license to steal and hurt honest AUTHENTIC item sellers...after all why make money off 1 or 2 real items when you can let a crooked bootleg seller sell  two or three hundred or more...Take a look at how many counterfeit claims against some sellers and they are still here!! WHY  because they make more money for ebay than you do....the real shady character is the one running the show...
