I'm posting this to let other sellers know that ebay is already in the process of changing the postage calculations on active listings prior to 6/23 and for buyers to know that it is not too late to buy and especially pay for a large, light weight item. Any seller should refund the difference in calcualted vs. actual postage if they ship out before 6/23.
I was thinking of killing a couple large item GTC listings on June 21, right before the USPS DIM (Dimensional Weight Pricing) is applied on June 23. I was wondering how eBay would automatically apply it to current listed items so no one would be surprised if DIM was calculated during check out.
To test, I have a large guitar like instrument listed and when I entered a zip code from a couple states away, in PA, the calculated cost came up as $32.25. I then went to the USPS site and calculated postage with my zip code going to PA and then the box dimensions: 55 x 12 x 6 and the the weight: 4.8 pounds. USPS states as of today the cost would be only $11.60 for Priority Mail. I then did the upcoming DIM calculation per USPS:
"1.3.2 Determining Dimensional Weight for Nonrectangular Parcels
Follow these steps to determine the dimensional weight for a nonrectangular
parcel:
a. Measure the length, width, and height in inches at their extreme dimensions.
Round off (see 604.7.0) each measurement to the nearest whole inch.
b. Multiply the length by the width and then that total by the height. (Example:
11 x 6 x 3 = 198.)
c. Multiply the result by an adjustment factor of 0.785.
d. If the final result exceeds 1,728 cubic inches, divide the result by 166 and
round up (see 604.7.0) to the next whole number to determine the
dimensional weight in pounds. "
SO, my example is: 55 x 12 x 6 = 3960. 3960 x .785 = 3108.60 3108.60 divided by 166 is 18.7265 which needs to be rounded up to 19.
I went back to the USPS site to calculate a 55 x 12 x 6 box at 19 pounds, not the 4.8 which is the actual weight, and the new adjusted rate would be $31.75 which is close enough for me for the $32.25 now being calculated by Ebay.
Unfortunately, with the increase in postage, especially for large light weight items such as some paintings, framed large posters, guitars, hunting bows, children's playsets, plastic pedal cars, and Especially plastic yard blow molds such as a large Santa or Snowman, these items will have to be re-priced to make them affordable with the new postage rates or they will probably only be bought locally.
Out of curiosity, has any other sellers changed their views on selling larger items?

The new changes to the dim rules aren't live in the calculator until the 23rd, but the current dim rules (higher to some zones) have been there for years.

The postage hikes are nothing more than a money grab for USPS since the china free shipping is going away that WE pay for in fall, USPS will be saving billions of dollars a year, it will be interesting to see how ebay handles the no longer free shipping for china since there partners with them.
Yes, i won't be selling large items here any longer. The money grab on shipping right now is due to the obama signed in E-Log, drivers are only getting in 5-6 hours a day drive time, no one wants to own or drive a truck any longer, and the only way transport companies can make this loss of money is to raise prices, not only has it affected USPS Fed ex etc...but everything that is transported, food, gas, etc...we are in serious trouble if we don't get rid of the E-Log.
So, now on top of the E-Log, we have the china deal leaving soon, so USPS wants to gouge us before that happens.with Dim weight. It's all a huge scam, the E-Log isn't, if people don't educate there selves on that one, prices will keep climbing on everything. It needs to be fought against badly.

Everyone read up on Map 21 that passed into congress with obama, this is part of the E-log. If the people don't learn and fight it, prices will keep rising and rising on EVERYTHING.

Hi, but not sure what an E-Log is...but if it was created by Mr. Obama, then you need to email Mr. Trump to help you fix it. Not sure what Obama has to do with your dilemma? USPS is what it is...June 23 they go to all Zone DIMs. Where before it was only the first 3-4 zones ?. I don't work for the USPS but shipping will be what it is...come June 23. JMO. And...if you believe this is a political post, then have it moved to the Soap Box.

Most of my listings are used car taillights and headlights. So my packages are usually over 12x12x12, even though many are only 3-4#.
I am in Michigan, and I already don't make many sales to the West coast, because I use calculated shipping. And packages going out there are 2-3 times as much as shipping to Ohio, or other fairly close States.
Once this kicks in, I'm afraid it is going to kill sales, at least of the common newer lights. I do have some older, more unique stuff, and I will probably have to concentrate more on those items.
This postage increase ought to help local B&M stores everywhere, but is going to hurt online sales. And people in small towns where many things aren't available except by ordering online are going to suffer, too.
I don't see any good coming from this.... Sigh
