I have been selling a rather expensive auto part that is heavy, large and difficult to ship. I also require a core charge and include return shipping for the customer. However by adding the shipping and core charge to the base price of the unit makes it seem considerably more expensive that my competitors. People don't take the time to look and see that there will be a large chunk of that money refunded to them once the core is received. Thus, I would like to have the option to charge the customer only if they decide to not return the core. Is there a way to do that? Also, I would be interested in know how to add installment payment options for my customers.

Assuming you're referring to the batteries you sell, would it work for you to list those as local pickup only, although, yes, I realize that this would cut down on your pool of buyers?
Also, have you checked on how other sellers of batteries on eBay handle this issue?
And, sorry, no, you cannot turn yourself into a business that takes payments on installments on eBay sales (although eBay itself does offer that possibility to some buyers some times).

You list your item with two options in the dropdown; one with core and one without. Your customers at quick glance will see the lower "no core" price and usually with "starting at:" in front of it. Once in your listing they will see the two options and use the description to explain the details. Only sell the lower price option if the customer has already shipped a core to you first. This option would make them responsible for inbound shipping, but you price on that item may reflect that depending on how bad you need their core.
