Contact info, off site sales, and bots gone wild...

There was a thread a few weeks back, where a seller had a potential customer ask for contact info.

The seller got a bot warning about off ebay sales, and warning that they could get in trouble.

Sellers were freaking out, the guy had replied we can't do that, and he still got a warning.

I think it was Trinton who came on and said the seller did the right thing.

And that take downs are reviewed by humans.

I so do hope that is true, but I have only heard tell of one seller who came back after a bot boot.

I only sell Cessna 150 aircraft parts, so we will talk about parts.

I had a guy want a 400 buck part, but we needed to make sure it was the correct part.

I jacked the price to a grand, sent him a message that I had jacked the price so it wouldn't sell.

Yep, it's the part he needs, I lower back to 400, he buys, all is good... or is it...

Check PP and my funds are on hold, say what I have never had a hold,

And my ebay limits are 5.8 million a month... snort, lucky if I make 5.80 a month.

I call PP and ask why?

The gal says the bots saw the swing in price and they put a hold on it.

She reads the messages ( this may have been before the split )

She could see that I raised the price so I could protect the buyer and sell to him.

She was cool with that, no problem.

Can she release my funds... well no.

so I get a supervisor, she said, and I quote...

"decisions of the bots are final, no human can over rule a bot"

I have a feeling that even talking price in this day and age would get me a slap down.

Lets talk seat rails

There are 4 different seat rails in a plane.

The floor plan has changer over the years.  that is 26 different part numbers.

To determine what you need I need the SN for your aircraft...

SN  1501234566789.... to a bot this 11 digit string is a phone number.

No part number 150xxxxxxxx is for the pilots left side, you need 150xxxxxxxx

Buyer says oops I got the sn wrong, that changes everything, they changed in mid 1972.

So he sends the correct sn 150xxxxxxxx, and I reply with the correct pn 150xxxxxxxx

But if you are changing one seat rail, it's a good bet the others need replaced also.

So for just this one sale, The bots will see a dozen phone numbers.

When I first started selling, I would tell my buyers I had a garage full of parts, just send me a message with what you need, I got a lot of sales for stuff not yet listed, but I put it all on ebay, just for them.

I would never send that message today.

Most sellers stay on ebay... if you go off site you lose any protection, we read it here every day.

I never went off ebay, and I never will

I wonder if this is why a seller has not replied to my email.

He is afraid to?

As long as you say you will put it on Ebay, you should be fine.

It's not just any message, buyer or seller, that triggers it.  It is if you give contact info or say anything that indicates you are possibly moving a transaction off ebay.

In a perfect world you should be fine, but we are talking bots.

Off ebay, again we are talking bots, they don't speak english like you and me.

Say you need a part for your 1947 ercoupe, ( I know more than Cessna 150's )

pn 415-1234567 oops... phone number...

There are none of these listed on ebay, there are only a few places you can get coupe parts.

But I can't send you a link to the few places where you can find them.

This is not off ebay, as it ain't on ebay to begin with.

There is a big salvage parts seller, he puts a business card in every listing.

Company name (all you need for google) town, state, phone number and web site.

When Mr.C got a new wood working tool, he had a question about using it.

Can I give him a phone number to a guy who can answer it.... no.  it ain't about a sale just info.

I just got a load of air tools, some I have no clue what they are, or the value.

I would like to call "Z" the tool man, but no I can't.  Just info only, no sales.

It's one thing if it is about a listing, I can see that, don't agree with it.

But the chat community, not so much.

There is a post over at the bar and grill about heart attacks.

Can "witch woman" call the poster... and give advice... no

I get ebay not wanting off site sales, but dang in the community, we are friends, just talking.

I have an old honda civic with a roached engine, but the car has a lot of good parts.

I don't have enough listings to list all of them.

I would like to make a listing "honda civic parts car"

And have buyers contact me with the parts they need.

But I fear the bots would see this as going off ebay.

( and don't say sell it local, In a town of 25,000 there are only 2 other 1990 civics, they are triplets

We wave and honk our horns when we pass )

ebay considers that a choice listing and its not allowed. You either list it whole or by the piece not listing for pick a part you want...

You made some excellent points Dave. The problem is, there are not enough "eyes" to handle this new "punishment" correctly. I have the email I sent to my friend. The manager, who yes had a strong foreign accent, read the email and said he could see that there was no intent to sell offsite, but he had no authority to correct it.  For those who can't understand and accept the fact this occurred, well I'm the one with the email aren't I? I'm the one who spoke with the so-called manager.

Now, the next thing I'll be hit with is that I broke a rule by giving my information out on eBay. These are two completely different situations that should be handled completely differently.

The people who fall through the cracks are just going to be let drop. Not important enough  in their busy schedule.

In another thread someone suggested adding the info the buyer wants to the description of the item rather than sending it in a message.  Seems a bit lame, but it is the best suggestion I've seen yet.
