Hello eBay Community,
I’m reaching out for some guidance on an issue I’ve encountered with an international eBay order, and I’m hoping someone here might be able to help.
Here’s the situation: A buyer recently placed an order with me for a limited edition etching. The agreed price was $250 USD, but the buyer from the UK has informed me that they were charged an additional $50 by eBay, which they don’t understand. The buyer mentioned that typically, import duties would be handled by the courier company, not added on by eBay. This extra charge has caused confusion and frustration, and they are now considering canceling the order altogether.
I’ve already tried contacting eBay support on my end, but they informed me that the buyer would need to reach out directly for an explanation. Unfortunately, I don’t have visibility into the buyer’s invoice or the additional charges, so I’m at a bit of a loss as to how to assist further.
Here’s what I’ve advised the buyer so far:
1. I suggested that they use the “Help & Contact” link on their eBay page and select the “Have us call you” option to speak with eBay customer support directly. I believe this is the best way for them to get a detailed explanation of the charges.
2. I’ve reassured them that the packaging I’ve prepared is secure and meets all shipping requirements, but it seems the issue lies with the extra costs they are seeing on their invoice.
Has anyone else experienced something similar where unexpected charges appeared on an international order? If so, how was it resolved? Is there any specific advice I can pass on to the buyer to help clarify this situation? I want to ensure the buyer feels confident in moving forward with their purchase and not canceling due to an unexpected fee.
Any insights or suggestions from those more experienced with eBay’s international order process would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Sounds like the shipping was by EIS (eBay International Shipping) where Duties and taxes are paid at checkout.
I see you do offer EIS on recently sold listings.

Sounds like your UK buyer was charged a VAT tax. If they buyer is searching on their own site, the prices shown include the VAT. When shopping on the US eBay.com, they may not be shown the price including VAT, which is added at checkout.

In this case EIS IS the "courier".

EIS eBay International Shipping:
@itscalledapostingid Duties/Import Fees are NOT INCLUDED in EIS listings/payments. Ebay is required to collect 'Sales Tax' (VAT) for many European Countries.
@brightcolors that 'extra' is their 'Sales Tax' (VAT in Euro speak) and they should NOT be complaining about it as it is a requirement of THEIR country (like most anything they purchase on many other sites)

(and trust me, most of the 'fees' are NOT included and the 'wishy washy' shown below, 90% of the time are NOT 'charged at checkout.
The buyer will be charged any US domestic shipping and handling costs that you specified, as well as international shipping, and other fees as determined by eBay. Import charges may be collected from the buyer at checkout or on delivery, either through customs or directly by the carrier. These charges include any customs duties, taxes, brokerage, and other fees.

Apparently it can vary (probably by country, maybe by item, they don't say exactly):
Import charges may be collected from the buyer at checkout or on delivery, either through customs or directly by the carrier. These charges include any customs duties, taxes, brokerage, and other fees.
(Emphasis added. That's from the link you posted.)

Import duty and fees are collected on some EIS sales.
I've also seen quite a few listings when buyers were given the option of paying customs fees to eBay at checkout or waiting until they received the item.

Which item is it?
