Charges for unsold item

I havent sold on ebay before and so far it's been a nightmare. I listed an item which 'sold' and ebay took $22 out of my account. I never got paid and told that to ebay but never got my money back. I relisted the item at a lower price and it still hasn't sold yet ebay took another $16 which overdraw my checking acount which cost me $30.  Now I'm into ebay for $68 for an unsold item. How do I communicate with these people and get my money back?

There is a process that you must follow in order to get a credit for the final value fee. Here is the Help page about what to do if a buyer doesn't pay:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/unpaid-items.html

When you file an unpaid item claim, eBay immediately sends the buyer a message that strongly encourages them to pay for their item within 4 days. But that's all eBay does.

If the buyer doesn't pay, then after 4 days you'll get the option to close the case, giving the buyer a strike and getting a credit for your final value fee. Do not expect to hear anything about your case directly from eBay. Either the buyer pays or they don't. If you don't close the case within 36 days after the transaction it will expire, which means no strike for the buyer and no credit for you.

You need to follow the process outlined in the post above ^^^^^^.  eBay charges you the fee when the item closes with a "buyer".  Whether they pay or not has got nothing to do with this fee.  You will have to follow the procedure to get the money back.  Relisting without completing the program puts you at risk for not having the item available should the first buyer decide to fork over the money.

Two things:
First -- Follow the process that the first two responses told you.
Second -- Come back and read this "Selling" Discussion group every day.  You'll learn something every day.

If it didn't sell the second time, what was the $16.00 charge for?  I don't see anything listed right now or in unsold.   I only see one lot of magazines that sold March 24th.  If that is the lot you didn't get paid for, I fear you may have waited too long to file the proper unpaid item case to get your fees back.

I'm sure you realize there are rules and procedures to follow to sell here, so I hope I'm wrong about the timing.

Ho exactly did you "tell" eBay? There is a specific process for unpaid items. Did you follow that process?

I relisted the item at a lower price and it still hasn't sold yet ebay took another $16

There must be something else going on here. Your Bay invoice detail will give you information about every single charge to your account - the date, amount, item numer, and reason. You will need to look at your invoice and tell us exactly what eBay says those $16 in charges were for.

EBay has several options with non-refundable fees.

Most of them are useless.

On Auctions- nervous new sellers will opt for a Reserve. This triggers a fee equal to the Final Value Fees on the Reserve price if it had sold. If it doesn't, the seller still pays the fee.

  • Avoid this by not using Reserves. Your opening price is already a reserve in that no one can bid less than that.
  • Auctions are a dying part of the eBay platform, with less than 15% of transactions being auctions and most of those being Collectibles.
  • Most deadbeat buyers infest the Auction category. Avoid them by using Fixed Price listings. Defeat them entirely by using Fixed Price/Immediate Payment Required, which leaves your listing open for 30 days or until someone actually pays for it.

EBay offers Sub-Titles which are not searchable. This fee in non-refundable.

  • You have 82 keystrokes in your Title which are Seachable and FREE
  • Item Specifics are Free and searchable
  • Your description is also searchable.

EBay offers positioning on overseas sites for a fee.

  • If you give a Shipping cost for a country, your listing will appear on that country's site and/or members in that country can see your dotCOM listing. There is no charge for this.

EBay offers some Design Templates for a fee.

  • Buyers don't see these until they open your lisiting- attracted by your free title, free pictures, free item specifis, and free description
  • You can design your own pretty template  by using HTML when you post your description, either from the choices above the Description text box, or writing  your own code. There is no charge for this.

EBay charges for some upgrades for your pictures.

  • Some of these might actually be useful.

The fees you will be charged are noted at the bottom of the Sell Your Item form before you click to agree and upload your listing.
