Additionally, it's highly discouraged to sell any expensive items until you learn what you are doing as a seller, getting to know ebay policies etc. It's not really as simple as ebay makes it sound with their 1-2-3 list, ship, get paid nonsense.
I recommend you read and make sure to thoroughly understand the 3 following links if you have not already, at a minimum, before continuing on ebay:
ebay Money Back Guarantee
https://pages.ebay.com/ebay-money-back-guarantee/
Selling policies
https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-policies/selling-policies?id=4214
Managed payments
https://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/service-and-payments/managed-payments-on-ebay.html
Additionally, if you have spare time, hanging around these forums and just reading topics randomly (along with the "Buying" forums), you can learn A LOT of information from the experienced buyers and sellers here who volunteer their time to help out those in need.
Wish you the best of luck!

Those who do the math find the fees end up being about 20% of the item selling price, when calculated based on the fees charged on shipping and sales tax.

If you're doing it right, it costs you nothing. Your buyers pay all the fees.

Always remember this. Do not list items of high value items unless you are able to give away.

...well then just post item for free, not selling, but make sure to charge reasonable shipping and handling...
...and still can lose that shipping cost too, plus eBay's fees, plus a shot of "20 bullets" for getting lost in battlefield of credit card charge back...
...happy loser's day...!!!

Some days it sure feels like it. I will also throw in some free gift cards if you don't mind.

If you have to ask eBay may not be the venue for you. You need to read and be astute enough to understand the user agreement. Everything is spelled out in detail that is time consuming to read but necessary.

...precisely...!!!

Really depends on "what" you are selling and "how" you decide to sell it.
Different categories have varying fees. Add -ons cost extra, advertising thru Promoted Listings costs nothing upfront, but add up when sold.
Tell us a little more about what you intend to sell and we can likely answer more specific.
Good luck - happy sales!
