Just hypothetically, what would happen if I cancelled a transaction as 'buyer wants to cancel' without then actually asking.
I had a buyer outbid everyone on one of my auctions...5 days passed and no payment...buyer ignoring all messages of me asking if they want to cancel..
i noticed the buyer was also a clothing seller, so I messaged them but through one of their items to 'ask a question' about one of their items to see if they'd respond.
Within 5 minutes the buyer/seller answered my question... I responded saying thanks for the quick response, and asked why the were ignoring my messages about the item they won at auction. Of course they ignored this message and didn't respond..
The auction only ended at $4.25, but waiting a week for someone to completely ignore me while i know they are getting my messages is extremely annoying to say the least.
Can i I just go and cancel it and say buyer request? I highly doubt I can, but curious what would happen.

File an item not paid for case. doing a buyer canceled when they didn't could come back to bite you.

I would file the unpaid item case. I would not have waited a week for contact and would not keep contacting them.

You don't "cancel at buyer request" when the buyer didn't request it. If they complain, eBay can see the lack of any message from them to you about it.
This is simply an Unpaid Item; file the proper dispute now. If 96 hours passes without payment, you can then close it out, which nets the buyer an Unpaid slap and gets you your Final Value Fees refunded. Also add them to your Blocked Bidder List (here) to prevent further difficulties in future listings. There's no need to contact the buyer any further.

If you already opened an unpaid item case after 48 hrs then close it. Why did you complain in the opening post about waiting 5 days and also said you waited a week. You could have closed it out before a week was up.
If you really messed around with your buyer by asking questions on their listing and then pointing out they were ignoring you, then they are probably as annoyed with you as you are with them. You know and they know they have all the power and would probably enjoy reporting you if you are not honest by trying to cancel with a false reason.
Good grief.

If that's the case then you should have posted in the original post, "hypothetically should I break eBay's rules" and we could have said no and be done with it.

Hopefully, what would happen would be you getting the violation you deserve. Telling blatant lies is a big part of the problem with eBay.

Whyare you thinking about canceling? File the unpaid and by the time that you have wasted messaging the buyer and waiting for them to reply, you would be close to closing the unpaid and given the buyer a strike that you could block for.
If more sellers give deadbeats strikes, then the odds are good everyone with proper blocks in place would get fewer deadbeats.

Seller opens after 2 days and then closes 4 days later.

Agreed. But clearly it seems as if nobody actually KNOWS what can or will happen if a seller does... of course I'm not going to, because I don't go against policy. But nobody actually KNOWS the answer of what WOULD happen..
Um hummm ok 😉

If a seller wants to cancel after a transaction is won doesn't he have to open a case.
And once open the buyer can choose to either accept or decline it.
Otherwise it is problem with address or OOS.
