I am helping a friend sell off some items. I have 100% rating. We also have things listed locally and in groups. The auction ended and sold without me knowing it. I actually sold the items locally. I hit cancel order on the auction. Obviously there was no item to sell. It was an accident to let it get to the end of the auction. The buyer is sending me some very vulgar and hateful messages. Keep in mind, he didn’t pay(cancelled order) and it was for $1 ! The guy is really upset over a $1 bid. I’m just trying to help my friend. Is there anything else I need to do? I don’t want to get a bad rating. I’ve been 100% since 2000.

I believe you will be charged by Ebay for cancelling. Too many sellers cancel when receiving only a single bid for $1. The buyer has a right to be upset, he won fair and square.

If you had it up for auction here, you shouldn't have sold it somewhere else.

There is no reason to communicate further with him, assuming you have apologized to him for your mistake.
Since you were at fault, the only thing you can do now is wait for the negative and then reply to it in a professonal manner, accepting responsibility for the problem.
Something like the lines of: "I am sorry this happened. I apologize for causing you disappointment and inconvenience. In selling items for a friend, I inadvertantly listed an item that had previously sold. Again, I am sorry. for my mistake."
When people look at a seller's feedback, they don't mind seeing a negative IF the seller's response is civil, factual, and doesn't try to push the blame off on the buyer.
And in a year's time, the neg will roll off the charts.

Canceling that transaction got you a defect point on your account. If you get a few more, you'll find yourself suspended from selling on eBay. You need to figure out a better way to keep track of your items.

What she said. 😃

@babydart Sometimes our errors cost us a bit, but the important part is learning from them. This was a lesson not to list an item for auction that you also have listed somewhere else. The amount of the transaction has no merit, you listed an item for auction that was not available. This will never happen to you again. Remian positive and move on from it. Best of luck to you....

It’s strange how you say he is upset over a dollar bid, as if that small amount shouldn’t make him upset, but it’s actually the opposite. He is probably more upset since he rightly thought he won at such a low price. I might understand forgetting about a fixed price listing if you had hundreds listed, but an auction and only a couple things listed.

The elder man I’m helping sell his models for sold it… and I learned that he’d listed it locally. I don’t think he understood how eBay works, that I can’t just end it. The auction ended while the man sold some of his collection. It doesn’t change my life at all.. I don’t mind helping friends and it was an honest mistake. I’ve offered the seller a refund of monies even though he hasn’t paid anything. That’s more than somebody who doesn’t care does.

An eBay seller CAN "just end" an auction that has more than 12 hours left.
"It doesn’t change my life at all.. .. it was an honest mistake."
That honest mistake could change your life (albeit in a minor way) if you ended up being suspended due to having multiple defects for canceling transactions, so you need to clarify some procedures with your friend. Many sellers who list items for other people make it a policy to only list items that they have in hand.

Why would you offer the buyer a refund when he has not paid? All you owe him is a sincere apology. If you want to stick a few dollars in an envelope and send it, okay. You will probably have a negative no matter what you do.
Guess there is no need to remind you that you and your friend neither to keep better track of your inventory.

You are a nonperforming seller who canceled an auction after failing to deliver what you promised.
IMHO you need to accept your bad rating if it comes, learn from your mistake, and stop selling items that you do not possess and control. This situation was entirely avoidable if you had been a responsible seller. The system is designed to punish sellers who do this, through both negative feedback and out-of-stock defects.
If by some luck you escape without damage to your feedback rating, IMHO you should consider yourself lucky rather than vindicated.

You also need to be aware of the upcoming $600 threshold for gross reciepts to trigger a 1099K for the 2022 tax year. Selling items for a friend sounds great, just make sure you don't get left holding the tax liability. Just FYI.

You should have taken possession of the it’s before listing them, to avoid this exact problem.

eBay is a 24/7 job... You need to be checking in, often. Reviewing listings, Orders, answering Questions.
