Cancel order with partial refund

I sold an item and shortly after the buyer asked to cancel since they found the item brand new. They offered to let me keep $40 for my trouble so I need to refund about $24. What’s the best way to handle this? Just issue the refund and don’t cancel the sale? I’ve already paid for the shipping label. If I cancel the order won’t the buyer get all their money back or is their option to cancel and issue a partial refund?

Cancel order with partial refund

If you cancel, buyer gets everything back.  Here's a way to handle:

- Void shipping label

- Make sure item marked as shipped if that void reverts the status to "awaiting shipment"

- Issue partial refund for $40 (with reason "other discount")

That's it!

I like your style. But will the OP possibly face an INR claim, since the order isn't cancelled? eBay doesn't know what the refund was for, after all... 🤔

Were your troubles worth $40? I'd cancel orders (Buyer requested) all day long for that offer. I'm skeert for you. grimacing

Wow, that's a really nice buyer you came across. There is no option to cancel an order and also keep any portion of the transaction. You would have to do some finagling to accomplish that, which I will stay away from. If you cancel the order due to buyer requested, which is a correct reason, you would not be out any fees, except for the .30 cents for the listing. You can void the label you never used, you can list the item again, so you aren't 'out' anything except for the .30 cents. Buyer could always send you back money via PayPal as they are being so nice about this. Buyer could have lied about the reason for a return, so they are being very upfront and kind to you. Best of luck to you.... did I mention how nice this buyer is?....

Yeah, I'd just go by the book on this one. Get it closed out on paper and move on...

I am with Lamber, you are out nothing but your time (0.30c) do the right thing, thank the buyer for their consideration, but you are happy to refund in full.

Cancel the order...

Refunding $24...and then cancel the order...that would mean buyer made a cool $24. off of you.

If it's too good to be true...walk away from the sale.

How does that work?

Buyer paid approx $64.00, item was never sent, buyer offered seller to refund $24.00 (remember buyer has no item) so that would put the buyer in the hole for $40 how is the buyer better off?

Or have I totally misread the situation @bigb32  ?

My understanding of @12345jamesstamps's post is that the OP should just cancel the order and refund in full, period. Vs. issuing a partial of $24, plus the $64 (full) refund that comes with the cancellation. Buyer= + $88/Seller= -$24 🤔

There's no danger of refunding the buyer more than they paid.

Once an order is refunded in full there is no more to refund.

"so I need to refund about $24."...for what ? "and keep $40."...makes no sense at all.😗

I "mention to walk away from the sale"....means cancel.
