CATEGORIES AND SUB-CATEGORIES

Why in the world has ebay been messing with the categories? They were fairly straightforward before, but now they are ridiculously complicated and overly detailed, with sub-categories and sub-sub-categories abounding. I wanted to buy Christmas decorations today, and rather than getting a straight list of what's available, I am served a menu of things like, under "ornaments", "fabric", "glass", "shapes", and on and on and on. Time-consuming and not helpful. When I did click on one of these choices, the format was bizarre and wasteful of space. Who does this stuff? Apparently some gink who is neither a buyer nor a seller and who lives in the land of oughta-be. Let's get real. Something else I noticed is that this once-crowded category seems to have fewer listings than last year at this time, and this is the hottest selling period for these items. If you know what you're looking for specifically, you can type, for example, "Shiny Brite" into the search and come up with a short list of such products. But unhampered browsing can show me pieces that I didn't know existed.

eBay now shows you what THEY think you want to see instead of what you search for.  Certain terms will get you locked into specific categories that may or may not include what you are looking for.  eBay holds the right to not show any listing they choose in the search results for any reason.

CATEGORIES AND SUB-CATEGORIES

I read once that Ebay does this because they do not want the buyer to be overwhelmed.

One thing I search for is a particular character doll, Snow White.  I always used ALL CATEGORIES; now it changed to DISNEY.  BUT I don't want to JUST see Disney dolls, so I have to change it back to the all categories that I had it on before Ebay decided to change it each time, to DISNEY.

I think buyers can handle the many listings without being overwhelmed.  They will know when they want to stop searching, but they need to see what they are looking for.

I would not be in the least bit surprised if they also did this just to give sellers more busy work in fixing their listings in order to reduce the chances of any of them having the time to start putting some of their eggs into additional baskets.

If it works, sell it. If it works well, sell it for more. If it doesn't work, quadruple the price and sell it as an antique.

As I've already expressed, I'm assuming that I will be leaving ebay in the springs. Whether I will find another basket is still up in the air ... bit I think not. -- Papyruspapillo
