Buyer with no feedback bought $2000 New in Box Rare Gaming Console. Nervous about possible scam

Hey all,

I have no issues selling to buyers with no feedback EXCEPT on high value items over $1200-$1500+. A buyer with zero feedback bought my $2000 new game console, but i'm nervous they might try to pull a scam on me since the console has a high fraud rate (not a PS5 but similar) Is there anything i can do on my end like recoding myself boxing up the item or otherwise to protect my own interests? I'm tempted to cancel the transaction and wait for a buyer with at least 1 or 2 reviews but idk... I get we all had to start somewhere but on a $2000 item? Makes me a bit nervous. I would love to hear everybody's opinions 🙂

When was the account created? I'd say cancel the transaction, not worth the $2,000 risk

The time to get nervous about this is BEFORE you list it for sale.  There is nothing much you can do to prevent someone from scamming you with a false claim.  Just about anything can be had for free (at the seller's expense of course) with a little front money and a lie.  When you get paid, eBay expects you to ship. Cancelling after the fact gets you a serious account defect, and you are not allowed more than a couple of those before you lose your ability to sell here.

Be sure to get "signature confirmation" should you decide to ship this.   Just my personal advice, I would NOT ship this to any of  the freight forwarders in Delaware.

Nothing you can do....  You can and most likely will loose the item and your $.

Never sell anything online that you can not afford to give away.

The only way out of this is to cancel the sale as out of stock and take the seller hit. Then sell it locally.

The problem i have selling it locally is no one has the money right now to buy it locally. About $800 is the most expensive item i can sell locally unless it's a car or actual gold

This is good to know, i had to cancel one item earlier this week since i had accidentally sold it locally without knowing it. It's not the selling that makes me nervous, it's the increased risk to selling to an account with no history. I'm definitely getting insurance, confirmation, signature and overnighting it to their address.

The time to wonder about scammers is BEFORE you list the item.

Never list anything you can’t afford to lose.

@chapabargain

As for cancelling, there is no valid reason to cancel. When looking at the options, ‘I’m in over my head’ is not listed.

How many feedback did you start out with?
How many scams did you pull off before becoming ‘legit’?

I'm not aware of anything you can do to protect yourself beyond the basics: (1) verify that you've actually received payment by logging into PayPal or checking your MP account; (2) pack well to prevent damage, and ship with insurance and signature confirmation; (3) ship only to the address provided with payment; and (4) if you're not using an eBay label, be sure to upload the tracking number once you've shipped.

If I wanted to sell a risky high-value item, I'd do so locally for cash. Seller protection is minimal here.

Don't waste your time doing a video.   Ebay will not even look at it as they can be easily faked.

Can you afford to lose the item?   If not, cancel the sale for problem with buyer's address.

Ways you can be scammed:

1) fake paypal "you've been paid" email

2) buyer claims box arrived empty

3) buyer claims item not as described and returns his old broken item or a box of rocks.

There are probably others but the above are the main ones.

If you sold it locally you might only get $1000 for the console but I would think $1000 is way better than 0.

When was the ID that purchased the unit created?  Did you look up the address?  Can you ship it with a service that will actually use signature confirmation (hint - USPS is not going to be an option evidently, as others have posted recently that in some regions, USPS is still not actually having individuals sign) and be able to insure it, in case it goes AWOL in transit?

$2k is a lot to have at risk.  So this would be potentially the 2nd cancellation on this unit?  Have you considered listing it where the buyer would buy using local pick up only?

The issue i have is there is no buyer near me with the funds to purchase this since i am in a rural area. Online is my only option unless i take it to a game store on consignment. The address seems good and the name on the account checks out so i'm going ahead with the transaction. I'll be doing next day air with $1900 insurance and a signature

You definitly should of thought about it before listing. You risk having your account restricted by canceling. You risk getting robbed by sending it. Weigh the possibility of not being able to sell here against if you can afford to give the $2000 item away, and make your decision. I have sold many things locally for less that I could have got on eBay, because a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush.

Of course cancel. The buyer can just say he got an empty box...

Best way to prevent this is to use auctions where you can closely monitor bidders and their feedback history, or lack of.
