I've got a buyer asking for my help with returning an item I have no problem with them returning the item, but in all my years on eBay I've never ran into a buyer who does NOT know how to open their own case and I do not feel I should have to walk them through it, especially since it's a buyer's remorse case and I don't want them picking the wrong option forcing me to pay return shipping.
should I attempt them to clarify that it's a remorse return or should I unjustly just go ahead and eat the return shipping just to be done with it? or should I just continue ignoring them?

Be done with it.

I wouldn't involve eBay if possible
Have your customer box it up and send it back
Most of the time the customer won't ask you to pay shipping.
If you get eBay involved one of you will have to open a case and then you might have to send a label depending on the reason they pick. Then the case has to be closed when you receive the item back.
If both of you are honest you can do this without involving eBay or Paypal. . .
If either of you are in doubt go the eBay way!
Ebay wants buyers and sellers to work things out on their own if possible. . .

I think to be safe you should try your best to walk them through the correct process.
As sellers on ebay, we have a responsbility to offer good customer service, even if it means assisting someone with the obvious.

I feel they were going to ship the item back on their own dime they would have done so already unless they destroyed the label with my address on it.

What exactly did the buyer say?
Perhaps you could politely say something like: "I will be more than happy to assist you with the return. Please note that you will need to pay for return shipping. Here's how you can go about returning the item to me." and briefly explain from there what they need to do in order to return it.
